There once was a ribbon. Her name was Ribbon, as plain as the decorative object that she was. Ribbon was very vain and liked to get up every morning from her place in the sewing basket full of odds and ends. Every morning, she would look into the small pink hand mirror that would be lying beside her in the sewing basket. She would see the cutest, most beautiful face in the whole world every morning and was delighted. Then Ribbon would reluctantly stop admiring herself and would begin to get ready for the day ahead of her.

Ribbon was a blend of deep blue and light purple. She had sparkly pink edges and felt like Chinas best silk when she twirled across your hand. Ribbon usually would be in good spirits everyday, but there was somebody she loathed. Her name was Scissors and liked to tease Ribbon about her extravagant looks. Scissors would say, Ribbon, you should start being like me. I am everyones role model.

I can take care of myself with these strong, but fashionable, blades unlike your limp, weak material. Also my eyes are so big I can see everything! Yeah, but too bad you cant see that I look better than you even if I cant protect myself you oversized piece of scrap metal! , Ribbon would snap back. Ribbon would get so angry, she would turn a bright red all over and start arguing or crying.

That day, this sort of feud happened between the two again and the whole sewing basket complained of the racket. Oddball the ragged string would come out of his little pile of odds and ends to yell back at Ribbon and Scissors to shut up. Oddball complained, Im working on deciphering a code in this map I found the other day. Stop bothering me, or u two will regret it. Then Ribbon became curious, stopped babbling, and asked, What map?

Is it the one that the kids found yesterday? Is your map the one that the kids put into our sewing basket and forgot about it? One and the same. The location of the buried treasure is very far, but a few days by boat should get us there. Unfortunately, Im too old to go on these types of expeditions. Forget it then.

said, Oddball. Treasure? Real buried treasure? With pirate gold and jewels the size of frying pans? Wow!

Hey, if youre too old, then can I help you get the treasure? said Ribbon. Well, first of all, you might be too young, Ribbon. And also, there might be many dangers along the way. Like fire-breathing dragons or pirates or hurricanes or... There are no dragons on this earth, well, not that I know of...

but Ill be careful anyway! Please let me go. Im sick of the same old routine everyday, with the admiring and the shouting. , interrupted Ribbon. Then Scissors could not bear to be ignored and so she shouted, Yes! Let the shrimp run away to follow myths so I can have some peace and quiet around here! Ribbon glared at her for a few moments, and then regained her happy look.

So can I go? When am I leaving? Where should I go? Do I get the map you have? Can I go or not? Please, please, please say yes!

Ribbon vigorously hassled Oddball. Alright already! Ribbon you can go! Just stay out of my business next time and no more noise! Im trying to work here, people! yelled Oddball as he thrust the map into Ribbons outstretched arms and retreated slowly into his dingy rag pile.

At this, Scissors ran off to some other dark basket corner and left Ribbon in serene solitude. Ribbon immediately started to think of a good plan. She studied the map carefully. The big, black X was on a distant, tropical island. It seemed to her very far away, as the X was on the Island of the Komodo Dragons, where Ribbon was only in Vancouver, Canada. Ribbon wasnt too sure if the island was full of real dragons or not, but she gathered her courage and went over her escape plan.

There once was a very old woman. She was very adventurous and wanted to get away from her boring neighborhood. She took a cruise and was now skimming across the sea to go to Korea. She was sitting in a beach chair on the ship deck to suntan. You should know that this old woman was the sewing baskets owner. The old woman had a habit of bringing her sewing basket with her wherever she went, so now it was lying in the sun behind her.

Unfortunately, the old woman did not notice as something slipped out of the basket and fell into the frothing waves. Ribbon was... well... a ribbon.

She didnt have to breathe or eat. All Ribbon wanted now was to see the welcoming sunlight again and to stop sinking into the blurry depths of the unforgiving blue ocean. Now Ribbon had studied the map carefully and had memorized it my heart. The map was brittle and had signs of aging. Ribbon had had the map carefully tied in with her, but as she plunged into the beating waves, the map disintegrated in the salty sea, leaving Ribbon with only a tight knot in her middle. With this knot, she began to sink faster into the dark beyond of the ocean.

Ribbon tried not to panic, but the looming wall of doom reached out to meet her faster and faster. Then she saw a pair of gleaming teeth right in front of her. She closed her eyes, wishing that she should not have jumped into the waves, but instead spent more time thinking of another way to get the treasure. The hammerhead shark was considerably older, wiser, and definitely larger than the old woman who owned the sewing basket. Sharks have been around here for ages and lived with the oldest dinosaurs, thus passing down their secret hunting tricks to the younger generations. Whack saw a blue, purplish object and knew immediately that it wasnt food.

Besides, he ate already and was quite bloated. It also looked like seaweed or kelp, and everyone knows that sharks are not vegetarians. There it was, the purple seaweed dancing with the waves and the swarms of glowing plankton in the dim sunlight. He then realized that pieces of runaway seaweed couldnt possibly have huge knots tied in their middles, so Whack went closer to the curious object to investigate. Ribbon opened her eyes and saw that she wasnt sinking anymore.

In fact, she was fortunate to have been caught into an ocean current. Now she was speeding through the waters quite nicely. She began to relax. Ribbon thought: If I wasnt in danger of sinking, then this underwater surfing would be quite fun! She forgot all her happiness as a dark shadow was coming for her.

Ribbon closed her eyes again. Well how do you do? What in tarnation's are you, an eel? Well then you would be the most parties eel Ahve ever seen in mah entire darned life as a hammerhead shark! Ribbon popped her eyes open in surprise. This shark did indeed look frightening but he was very friendly.

She thought: Maybe hes playing with me, as cats play with their food before they eat the mice. Oh within tummy looks so full its about to burst! I suppose he ate already well no worries here! Ribbon greeted Whack, Humor great hammerhead shark. I am Ribbon. Whats your name?

Oh Ah almost forget mah name! Ahm called Whack, as in Whack-ah-mole but there aint no dirt-diggs living een da sea to chews on are there? Ah was kidding, seriously. Ahm so stuffed from crayfishes dat Ah think Ahm gonna darn blow up this whole ocean! Mah poor, poor tummy hurts now! But enuff bout mee...

wat bout you? Watch doin round date parts? Whack grinned weakly. Ribbon felt the imaginary needle on the imaginary danger meter rush down to the imaginary safe zone. Forget about the danger meter!

The sea around her was real and so was her rescuer! Then she thoughtfully added: This shark must be very old and must have teeth problems. He is speaking very strangely! She answered his question politely, Im trying to swim. The frolicking in the waves move and my Go where the ocean takes me plan arent working for me at all! Teach me how to get through the sea, and hurry!

The Sun is going down and I cant see at night. Please, please, please! I need your help badly. Well aint dat nice? BUT ITS WRONG!

Sharks dont help lil ribbon and stuff or decorations or bracelets for within. But you could help me n maybe I could help you learn to swim. Why dont cha call in a clunking boat to get you where yooh's need bein, misses? Ahve be tickled pink all over if yah would (and you should) help me! So whadayah say? Bargain or no?

Yes... Ill help you... Whatever it is that you need help with. Now you have to tow me t...
