Good afternoon everyone. Im Dr. Nikolovski and Im here to talk to you about the controversial Barbie. Barbie, recently turned 40, is perhaps the most debated about childs toy in the world. She is sold in over 150 Countries and is known to almost every child and adult worldwide. According to creator Mattel, over 93 % of all Australian girls aged between 3 and 10 own at least one Barbie each, and the typical American girl of the same age has on average 9.
So what does this model of supposed perfection have to do with real life you may ask? This successful toy whom is considered to promote an unhealthy lifestyle and image, is a role model of millions of girls around the world, including you daughters. Today I am here to put you any doubts you may have to rest and to promote Barbie as a good and inspiring toy for your children to be playing with. Barbie is one of the most enduring stars in the world. Shes loved, hated, tortured, adored and disemboweled by millions. But the argument still remains, that Barbie is a bad role model for young girls.
While some agree yes, I definitely believe no! Barbie has been blamed for quite a few things. Eating disorders being one them, as a result of her anorexia-inspired body. However it must be noted that eating disorders are proven to be a mental disease, just as something like schizophrenia.
How a doll, a toy, something for girls to play with is able to be responsible for such a disease is a question Id be curious to hear answered. Especially as the girls whom play with Barbie are those aged between 3 and 10. Barbie has been around since March 1959, and Im yet to hear about an eating disorder directly linked with her. I believe that Barbie is an inspiration to young girls in her multiple careers. Which over the years have included things from tennis player, presidential candidate, and paleontologist to an astronaut, which was back in 1964, before there were any women astronauts. This years new generation millennium Barbie of 2002 is set to head off to international High School in New York.
Barbies instant success was not from her body or looks, but clearly from what came with her. It's clear now that her ultimate success is her transformation like qualities. Children can chose to dress her as they like and choose. Some critics say that the reason for Barbies non-verbal existence is because they / she are unable to think of anything intelligent to say. However the reason for this is that children have their own ideas and thoughts of what Barbie should and does sound like and say, and a computerized voice would ruin their own personal image of Barbie. Mattel did trial a talking Barbie programmed to say encouraging things such as teamwork is fun but she was not near as big as a success.
As many of you as parents know Barbie hasnt stopped at simply the doll. She now has her own monthly 64 -page magazine, CD-ROM Fashion Designer Program, car, house, and accessories that come with the doll, or bought separately, and now even her own website. What could Barbie as a company possibly put on a website you might be thinking? Well, the site even has a section for parents.
The section includes things you can do with your daughters, ways to explain sticky situations to her, as well as a monthly article that will inspire both you and your daughter. The site also provides a question and answer section that yourself or your daughter is able to submit a question about pretty much anything that a trained professional will answer. It also has loads of things for you daughter to do, all safe and subtly encouraging in some way. After looking at this website you will realize that there is more to Barbie and their creators than you may think. I also can honestly say that Barbie. com will inspire you children without promoting and unhealthy image, or be harmful to you childs self esteem.
Or anything else people will try to tell you she may do. To me Barbie is a wonderful toy for you child to be brought up with. She turns playtime into a world of inspiration, and is a doll who is always there for your daughter to pretend with. Pretending makes our daughter feel safe.
Every girl knows the world has problems as well as sometimes our very own families, and Barbie is a way for your daughters to escape from it all. Pretending youre a fairy when your five, or an astronaut when you ten isnt at all different from a high school student aspiring to be a graduate in economics when theyre 18. All our lives weve imagined and dreamed about success before weve reached it, so that we have something to look forward to when we finally get there. We all have some form of pretend we use to light the path of life ahead. Young girls who play and pretend with Barbie are just getting a head start on a lifetime of success through such a versatile doll. So trust Barbie with your children, and encourage and be a part of your childs and Barbie life, and you and your daughters will all benefit.
