The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkein is the tale of the journey of Bilbo Baggins. The story takes place in an imaginary land. We follow Bilbo on his journey to Lonely Mountain for treasure.

The story begins in the home of Bilbo. He is a well-to-do hobbit who never had any adventures or would do anything unexpected. One day, the wizard Gandalf appears and asks him to go on an adventure, but Bilbo tells him to come back tomorrow. Gandalf shows up the next day with thirteen dwarves.

The dwarves speak of a journey to an old mountain home beneath Lonely Mountain where long ago a dragon chased away the people and stole their treasure. Bilbo decides, after some coaxing, to join them on their journey. The next morning they set out on their journey. One day, the travelers need to make a fire, but the ground is too cold and wet.

The dwarves see a fire burning in the distance and Bilbo is sent to investigate. He comes across three trolls eating mutton around a fire. Bilbo, being daring, tries to pick a pocket but he is captured. To save Bilbo, Gandalf causes the trolls to argue until the sun rises, which turns the trolls into stone. The group travels on. They come across Rivendale, where they stay and get fresh supplies.

They must exit through the mountains. The path is very dangerous and the rain is falling heavily. The weary travelers find refuge in a cave and fall fast asleep. Bilbo soon awakens to the ponies being stolen by goblins. All of the dwarves and Bilbo are grabbed by goblins. Gandalf, on the other hand, makes himself appear in the great hall of the goblins and kills the chief goblin moments before the dwarves are to be killed.

The party of dwarves flees into the tunnels further into the cave. Bilbo was dropped and knocked out from the commotion. When he awoke he looked around and saw a ring. He wanders around for a moment and encounters a creature names Gollum.

Bilbo asks Gollum if he can get him out of the caves and Gollum challenges Bilbo to a riddle contest. Bilbo wins the contest. and he realizes that the ring he found was Gollum's lost ring and it can make him invisible. Gollum thinks that Bilbo stole the ring, so he runs out of the caves to find him, while the invisible Bilbo actually follows him out of the caves. Bilbo is reunited with his partners, but he keeps his magical ring a secret. They soon enter a dark and terrible forest without the help of Gandalf.

Giant spiders capture the dwarves in the forest and Bilbo saves them with the magic ring. Soon after they get out of that mess, the dwarves are captured by wood-elves. Bilbo again saves them by hiding the dwarves in empty wine barrels. In these barrels they reach the destination of Esgaroth. From here they set off towards the mountain.

They search for everything at the mountain, such as, the gate and the keyhole to open the gate. Bilbo sneaks into the dragons lair, and he steals a golden cup. Bilbo has a conversation with the dragon and discovers his weak spot over his left breast. The dragon then goes off to destroy Esgaroth, where he is killed by a man who was warned by a thrush from the mountain. The army from the town decides to come and take the gold, so the dwarves barricade the mountain. When the army arrives Bilbo attempts to make peace by giving the armies stones as a means of bargaining.

Just before they fight, Gandalf warns them of an army of goblins coming. The armies join together to fight the goblins. The chief dwarf dies in the battle and asks Bilbo for forgiveness. Bilbo heads home to find that most of he possessions have been auctioned off. He gets his things back and returns to a simple life.

I think a theme from this book was that greed causes crazy things. Almost every character in the story had some kind of greed. Bilbo's greed for treasure caused him to go on this incredible journey that without the motivation of treasure he would have never gone on. Greed causes the townspeople to rush into war with the dwarves and defend the treasure from the goblins. The goblins are especially greedy in stealing ponies and fighting for treasure. Without the motivation of a reward many of the characters and groups in this book would have never done the things they did.

Overall, I cannot honestly say that I enjoyed the book The Hobbit. While reading the book, I had to keep checking who everyone was. The confusion of characters made me forget about the main themes of the book and even what the plot was at the time. I did, however, enjoy the excitement in the story and the mystical aspect of the book. I would recommend this book to a reader who likes fantasy worlds with many different characters, and someone who enjoys getting extremely involved in the books that they choose to read.
