In this play a group of three cruel and disturbed witches were used to display evilness and chaos that will eventually corrupt Mac Beths well being into mass murder. In Act 1 Scene 3 the theory of modern tragedy can be shown by the use of special affects, sound and setting. In Act 1 Scene 3 the use of special affect demonstrated that it was a modern day tragedy. There wasnt any doubt that lightning and storms were the most energetic way of showing how mysterious and horrid the three witches really were.

You could feel the witches trying to reach out and capture Mac Beths soul while he was unaware that they were foolishly manipulating him. When the fog and smoke arose from the ground as Banquo and MacBeth entered, you got a sense that the witches have sprung up an evil spell that will eventually damn them both. When one of the witches told the others about how she manipulated the sailor and his wife, this gave us clear evidence that the witches could do what ever they want when ever they want and will end up destroying MacBeth. Another example of special effects is how the witches had two headed animals and mysterious potions from all around the world hanging from their walls. One even had a necklace made of elephant tusks.

This shows how carefree the witches were about the world around them and that they could kill innocent animals and use them as decoration in their lair. The theory of modern tragedy is also shown in the use of sound and music. The music is very powerful and demanding when the first prophesy about MacBeth becoming king was announced. That same music was heard when it came true. Every time the witches entered a room there was creepy and spooky music that made the reader buckle in his seat because something evil was about to occur. The whistling sound of the wind put a cold chill into MacBeth that just froze him in his tracks.

Early in the play the witches spoke to him in a very convincing tone, All hail MacBeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Candor, and Macbeth didnt understand but he already felt that it would be great if he was king. This quote proves that it is a modern tragedy because they had so much power over him even at the beginning. The way this play presented itself to the people was magnificent. The descriptive setting was a great way to show that it really was a modern tragedy. The setting in Act 1 Scene 3 not only helps the reader understand where they are located, but it also shows the characters personalities.

When MacBeth and Bang walked into the witches lair it was like they had entered into a different world where there were no boundaries. It was very dark and wet. You could see the blood stains reflecting off of the rocks. You could see rats and mice that ran around this God-awful place.

As soon as MacBeth saw this place, he should have known that not even one of Gods creatures could have lived in a place of such filth. There was a vile odor that smelled like five-year-old cat intestine. The cave symbolizes a place of evil, but MacBeth didnt care because already the witches had him wrapped around their little finger, like their puppet, you might say. When he entered he smelled the horrifying odor from the lair. He says, So foul and fair a day I have not seen.

Is this suggesting that MacBeth is not what he seems to be-a great and noble solider? This makes the reader begin to wonder. Obviously special effects, sound and setting play a major factor in this play being a modern tragedy. Many readers feel that Mac Beths downfall is caused by his ambition. In this scene he is willing to turn his back on what he knew to be right. As a result of the witches evil ways, his desire to become king overpowered his faith in himself.

This proved that the witches used supernatural powers against MacBeth, which made him a modern hero. Bibliography:
