Do you have a little sister or brother? Are you one? Do you know someone that has a younger brother or sister? Are you a parent? Well, if you can answer any one of those questions with a yes, than I think that you will find my essay interesting. I think that most parents are unfair to their children.
Parents are unfair not by giving too little but by giving too much to their second child. I have a younger sister. She is 3 years younger than me. The age difference that sibling rivalry in girls is at its crest is when the siblings are 3 to 4 years apart. That is a fact. Also, since we are smack dab in the middle of the worst differences in ages, you can tell that we dont get along to well.
When I see her getting things that I had to wait until I was 13 for I dont appreciate the in your face attitude I get. But its not my sisters fault, no, not at all. If she wants something it is only natural for her to ask for what she wants. It is my parents fault. They are to blame. Parents give in to the face of a 9 - year old when the kid says, But my older brother / sister can do it.
The parent does not see that the 13 year old is more responsible. If the 13 year old asks their mom or dad to do something that 16 year olds do the parent would probably say no. This is because the second child always gets it better. I have friends that are second children and they admit to it. Most are proud to be able to do all the things that their older brother or sister is doing.
I see it differently because I am the older child. On the other hand I am being greedy and unreasonable from someone elses point of view. And maybe it is hard for a younger child to think what I am saying is true. To a younger child they might see me to be a jealous person that does not care about other people. They might think I am a spoiled rotten brat for voicing such an opinion.
The reader may even think I get everything my way and the one time that a younger person gets treated with a minute sum of equality it rekindles a untamed tantrum much like a two year old that wants a toy that they cant have. Truthfully, maybe I am a little like that little two-year-old. The only reason is because all of the two-year-olds friends with older brothers and sisters just got that toy that I wanted. From there they bragged about how much fun they had with it. I think that parents should think before awarding a new privilege to a child. If the reason a parent thinks a child should have something is because his or her older sibling has it, it is not a good reason.
But dont get me wrong here, you can give a 9 year old what you give a 13 year old, but then you have to give a 13 year old what you give to a 16 year old. Think of it this way if a 9 year old can do everything a 13 year old can do then a 13 year old can do every thing a 16 year old can do, and a 16 year old has a permit to drive. As a result, people should beware that someday they might find themselves allowing a 13 year old to drive a car that they cant touch the stop pedal for.
