John Doe, a 65 -year-old native of New York, has spent his entire lifetime gardening. He has been exposed to gardening as far back as he can remember. Doe discovered his green thumb as a young child assisting his father with the family's garden. The two spent hours planting the seeds, pulling weeds, and caring for the plants. Doe feels that his father was his biggest influence in gardening, and he gave him the knowledge to be successful at it. Even though Does father died many years ago, a part of him still lives on through Does knowledge of gardening and through certain tools that he uses.

One tool that is special to him is his fathers garden cultivator that is pushed by hand. It was produced by John Deer and unlike the steel-handled ones of today, this cultivator was made with wood handles. They dont make them like this one anymore, Doe said. He also uses the same small shovel as he did when he was a child helping his father plant. The theme of Does garden has always been vegetables. He grows sweet corn, beans, radishes, lettuce, cabbage, strawberries, pumpkins, onions, cantaloupe, watermelon, sweet and hot peppers, and tomatoes.

He likes the joy he gets when he gives his vegetables to his family and neighbors. He noted that they claim he has the best sweet corn they have ever tasted. He knows that many people like to incorporate flowers into their gardens; however, he loves to grow vegetables. I know flowers are not just pretty, but they are needed to bring bees for pollination. He stated and then whispered, I dont need any, because both the neighbors have some.

Gardening season begins for Doe as soon as the weather permits. Sometimes this is as early as late February or as late as the end of April. When asked about the amount of time he spends on his garden, Doe explained that the times vary. If he is planting, then it could take him all day, but if he is just pulling weeds it could take him only an hour. Doe said that he doesnt have any tricks for success. He believes that his garden is a product of hard work.

Although through experience, Doe has learned an important standard, to never plant the same thing in the same spot two years in a row. He also added, Since my garden is a good size and I could never use all the vegetables, if one has an imperfection, large or small, I throw it over my shoulder. That puts nutrients back into the ground. A part of Does garden that may be unique to newcomers is the snakes. Upon first glance they appear to be real, but they are made of rubber. Their purpose is to scare away animals that might not otherwise think twice about destroying the garden.

He also has a fake owl he uses to scare pests. The trick to using the owl is to not leave it in the same place everyday, but to move from one side to the other. Otherwise it just doesnt work, he said. In spite of this, sometimes a rabbit gets up the courage and snacks on his lettuce. A rabbit that is eating in my garden is not a smart rabbit. He states as he points to his pump pellet gun and grins.

Gardening is definitely a passion for Doe, but he spends an equal amount of time on his other hobby, fishing. Just as Does garden is a showcase for his green thumb, his basement is a showcase for his fishing abilities. The walls are filled with fish that Doe has caught and been recognized for because of their size and or rarity. Doe said that when hes not out in his garden he can be found reeling in the fish at Lake Laramie. He also noted that his father also introduced him to fishing, and he spent as much time with him at the lake as the garden. Does father counseled him on the dos and dont's of gardening.

Now it is his turn to advise his children on how to be successful gardeners. Two of his sons have picked up their fathers hobby and even the grandchildren get involved. While Doe continues to pass his love and knowledge for gardening to younger generations, he said that he will continue to garden for his own satisfaction as long as he is physically able to.
