... felecia manger can take the proper security measures to monitor the customers. One day Chris starts working at his local grocery store as a night stock clerk. His new supervisor Shane is an unusual person and is showing him the types of tasks he will be doing. Soon its lunchtime and Shane is looking for something for lunch.

Shane asks Chris if hes going to get anything. Chris tells him he brought lunch from home. Shane says well you dont need to do that anymore because we get lunch for free around here. Chris asks, well how exactly do we do that? Shane replies well check this out and he grabs something from the frozen food section and drops in on the ground and then steps on it. Whoops this is damaged now well have to put it in product recovery.

Shane tells Chris that when a product is damaged you empty the package and put it in the product recovery bin to insure the store receives credit so they dont have to write off the merchandise as a loss. Chris says, well you damaged that yourself though. Shane says yeah but the manager doesnt know the difference and its a good way to get free food. We work hard here so should get some kind of perk. Chris just nodded in agreement and didnt say anything else. So should Chris report Shane to the store manager or should he just ask the store manager about the stores specific policies since its his first day?

Chris should find out if Shane is indeed breaking company policy and if he is report him to the companys loss prevention specialists. I say this because the store manager maybe looking the other way when Shane breaks certain company policies in order to keep the workers happy. In this situation even if Shane wasnt breaking company policy you should never do something youre not comfortable with. NOT SHOWING UP TO WORK, BUT STILL COLLECTING A PAYCHECK A common occurrence in the workplace is employees skipping out on work.

Sometimes through no fault of their own such as illness or an accident employees have to miss work which is acceptable. In this example we will discuss an employee who just doesnt go to work and still gets paid for it and feels theres nothing wrong with it. In our example well use Kip the Administrative worker in the military. Kip works in an office with too many people, too little work and too little supervision. Kip is also one of those people who just likes to do the bare minimum and may have a drinking problem which contributes to his missed days at work. So Kip decides that once or twice a week hes going to skip work usually on a Monday or Friday so he has a 3 or 4 day weekend without using vacation time.

Now in the military you are paid a salary and could work 5, 7 or no days a week and still get paid the same. Kip feels no remorse in getting paid for not working even though his friends go to work everyday. So to try and cover himself on the days hes absent he makes up excuses to give his supervisor or just doesnt say anything at all and hopes nobody notices. Kip is bragging to his friend Ted one day how hes going to have a 4 -day weekend and hes going to this big party.

Ted asks him how hes getting the days off and why. Kip tells him he just makes up appointments he had or says hes sick. Ted notices when Kip does take days off its because hes too hungover from drinking to go to work or even get out of bed. Ted asks Kip about his drinking and Kip responds saying hes Irish so hes suppose to drink like he does.

Now Teds ethical dilemma is should he turn his friend in for missing work, which in the military is dereliction of duty and a serious offense. Ted also suspects Kip maybe an alcoholic and needs help. So what should he do? Ted decides to notify Kips supervisor about his possible drinking problems and how they might be affecting his work attendance. Ted did the right thing by notifying Kips supervisor and made himself feel better addressing Kips drinking problem so he could receive the help he needs. Lance is a computer programmer who runs his own software company.

He works on small projects as a consultant. Lance is hired by Ace Corporation to write a software program for their accounting department. Lance is coming close to his deadline for the project and isnt even close to completing the program. Lance decides to take a short cut and borrows part of a program from another company so he can meet his deadline. Lance has not committed copyright infringement by borrowing a program to use as his own. On top of that if he gives the program to Ace Corporation that might also be liable for lance's actions.

So the ethical question lance should be asking himself is twofold. Should he just tell Ace Corporation hes not finished and request a new deadline or should he ask the other company if he could use their program and turn in the program on his original deadline? Lance should ask for an extension and if he were to use another companys programming code he would have to ask their permission as well as the Ace Corporation.
