For many years music has changed the lives of every generation and in fact helped them develop into their own individuals. As we are reading this right now there is a battle over the way the next generation will get their music and what they will be allowed to listen to. As far back as the early 1900 s parents have been telling their children to turn down that awful noise, and as each generation turns to the next, the music always changes making the parent and child lose touch on each others style of music. From personal experience my father will be turning 50 in February and listens to music like The Who and The Beatles.

I have been blessed with the ears that actually enjoy this type of music, and it is not because I listen to his old vinyls or go out and purchase these CDs. It is because my generation has the technology that allows me to listen to these bands at the touch of a button. The main type of technology I am talking about is Napster. Napster is a music community for my generation that allows me to listen to all types of music without having to buy the whole album. I can honestly say that this is the main reason I have begun liking my fathers music. Napster works as a music information database that enables you to look up certain songs, but also research into the history of the bands and talk with other people from around the world about music issues.

For example last night I was downloading song from Credence Clearwater Revival while chatting with a older woman about which group had a bigger impact on America, the Beatles or Rolling Stones. This would not be possible to do 10 years ago because as America keeps expanding, technology will increase making it possible to bridge the generation gap more and more. The only thing that I cannot understand is why the government and musicians want to end Napster. First of all lets begin with the beginning of Napster.

A North Eastern College student named Shawn Fanning originated napster. The story goes that Shawn was in his freshman year living with a roommate who had a poor taste in music and his roommate kept complaining on how he could never find songs to download off of the Internet. Shawn, being a computer engineer major, developed a program that enabled people to find there favorite MP 3 s with out all the difficult obstacles in the way. This new program took on a buzz among all college campuses in the U.

S. and now there are over 20 million users nationwide. In the controversy against Napster, many supporters are fighting to keep their freedom alive. This case is about whether the musicians and record executives can use their control of music copyrights to achieve control over Napster's ground breaking technology and prevent it from transforming the Internet into ways that might help loosen up their present choke hold on music promotion and distribution. This once minor problem has emerged into a full-scale panic in the industry and has caused a huge clash in the way the people of the United States feel about their freedom of free music. I believe that mp 3 s and Napster have been a gateway for introducing unknown bands and spreading over populated songs to the ones who cannot buy CDs or even get a CD player.

For example, a local band near my home named SGR has had little success until there music somehow made it onto Napster. Now they are in discussions with a record company for getting an album deal. Napster is a device that shares, not steals. Supporting Napster is probably one of the best things a person of the new generation can do because we are fighting not just for the right of the freedom of free music, but the freedom of adapting to new technological inventions that will affect the rest of our lives. We adapted to television, radio, and computers, so why cant we adapt to this new innovation. There are so many bands in different cities and even suburbs that no one has even heard of.

These bands have very few ways of making them stand out above the crowd. But how can they do this without lots of money and tons of publicity? Using Napster to spread their music amongst the people is a great approach to grab the attention of many. Once they have a mp 3 out on Napster, it is just one click away before several thousand users can enjoy the music of the unknown. It is true that there are several other methods that these bands could use to introduce themselves to the world but why not start using a free service that millions have access to. You know that feeling when you hear a boy band pop song, like NSYNC, being played over and over and over again and it makes your face just cringe?

Well if you were to think about it, there are little girls out there just dying to play these songs over and over in their house but they cant because either they cant afford it or they dont have access to a CD or tape player. This is not just an example for young girls idolizing over their dream guy in a boy band, but anyone who does not have access to music but has access to a computer. Overplayed songs are the most popular songs on Napster. The songs that reach number one on the charts or are played again and again on the radio seem to be the most downloaded tunes off Napster.

This service is great for those who are single minded with their choice of music. Yes, this system may seem unfair to those artists creating and trying to make a living off their music but is it not selfish to share the music with those unable to purchase their albums. Metallica is one band involved in all this controversy against Napster. The band Metallica has delivered the names of 335, 000 people it accuses of music piracy to the online company it says aided the theft.

How is it this band that is selfish and upset because they are not getting paid for the sharing of their music, can report over three hundred thousand people who had no idea it was a form of stealing. Stealing is a hard word to use in this case. There is a huge difference between sharing and stealing. Lars Ulrich is the drummer of Metallica and the one who is behind all the controversy. Ulrich suggested the music traders were cowards, using high technology for low-down theft even as some fans broke their Metallica CDs and others waved anti-recording industry banners outside Napster headquarters.

If they want to steal Metallica's music, instead of hiding behind their computers in their bedrooms and dorm rooms, then just go down to Tower Records and grab them off the shelves, Ulrich said. Technologies that preceded Napster, such as radio, television and photocopy machines all permitted new methods of copyright infringement. But courts allowed them to flourish because legitimate uses were possible. "Only when the technology is not capable of legitimate uses does it make sense to outlaw it, " wrote the professors from schools such as New York University, Georgetown University and Boston College. Spreading music to the deprived, sharing the songs no one knows and creating a new freedom for music is definitely something that should be considered as an option in this case because if radio and television can slide off copyrights then cant there be a way for Napster?
