SYNOPSIS OF 2 nd INFORMATION INTERVIEW In November 15, 2000, I had to opportunity of meeting with Mike Kowae, the director of Zimmerman & Partners advertising Studio. The interview was arranged by phone on Monday Nov 13. I went to the interview with two of my classmates and it was definably a valuable experience. Mr. Kowae basically walked us around the studio very shortly. Then, since he is obviously a very busy person, he introduced us to the Graphics department staff so that they could give us more specific information.
We met four people in that department, but we mostly talked to Ms. Betty Barllew who is an animator. We asked her many questions about the type of work they do and about the equipment they have to develop their projects. The company focuses in Television advertising and among their customers there are local dealers like Auto Nation, and famous businesses like Taco Bell, Key Mart, Walmart, Payless, etc, They have created spots for The Florida Panthers, Dolphins and Marlins. It is primarily an "audio / video /post production studio" said Mr. , Kowae.
There are a total of five people in the design department. That is, two animators and three graphic designers. However, they all get to work as compositing artists or designers at some point. I was surprised to hear that because of the kind of work they do. They told us that so far this month they have finished around 30 projects! She emphasized on the fact that they all have to work on the different production stages at some point.
Even though Ms. Barllew, is the only one that works with Maya Unlimited, she also intervenes in the storyboard layout, the after effects compositing's. They basically work as a group and they work on any stage of production so that they can meet their deadlines. I got the impression that their itinerary is very busy and that they are under a lot of pressure! Among the software they use for animation, they have Lightwave, Maya, and Softimage. They use after effects as their main compositing program and Photoshop for designing.
They do not have an internship program anymore. Actually, when we asked them about their internship program, they did not seem to like the idea. They had a bad experience in the past with interns that did not have enough knowledge, so it became more like a training routine for the staff. They do offer freelance positions on a regular basis. When we asked Ms.
Ballew for a contact person in the industry, she said that she could not think of a name at the moment, but we could call their Art Department and talk to somebody in there. Their Art Department is also in Fort Lauderdale and they focus more on 2 D animation. I think this is a company I may consider when I graduate, but at the present time they do not have anything for me! Ms. Ballew was very nice and she even told us that whenever we had our portfolio ready, we could send it directly to her. Since the meeting was on Wednesday Nov 15, we have not sent the thank you letter yet.
