Conceptualization of Case Study This typology theory was developed to organize the voluminous data about people in different jobs and the data about different work environments, to suggest how people make career choices and to explain how job satisfaction and vocational achievement occur. Holland suggested that "people can function and develop best and find job satisfaction in work environments that are compatible with their personalities" (ICDM, 1991, p. 4 - 4). Holland based his theory of personality types on several assumptions. People tend to choose a career that is reflective of their of their personality.

Because people tend to be attracted to certain jobs, the environment then reflects this personality. He classified these personality types and work environments into six types which he labeled realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. He suggests that the closer the match of personality to job, the greater the satisfaction. Two major assumptions of the theory are: (1) that individuals and job traits can be matched, and (2) that close matches are positively correlated with job success and satisfaction.

These ideas are still part of our career counseling approach today. His theory of career development is built around how individuals process, integrate and react to information. The ways in which individuals process information are determined by their cognitive structures. These structures influence how individuals see themselves, others and the environment. Cognitive theories suggest ways to help clients build or refine a hierarchy of thinking skills and decision-making skills that influence career development.

Amelia is generally very successful in her studies, but she is the most successful in Social Studies. Also she works as a nurse and gets satisfaction from that job. She tries to take care of her family and is going to be a doctor in future. This means that she may be considered a social personality type. Activities of this type of people are directed at helping others.

Possible occupations for Amelia are social worker, doctor and other. Amelia is very good in sports, participates in the gifted and talented program. This means that her second most influential personality type is enterprising. She is 17 now. This is the stage of explorations in life, when young people try out new things through classes, work experience, hobbies, collect relevant information. They can make a tentative choice and develop their skills.

At this point of her life, the main goal of Amelia is to help her family, and she is looking for a way of doing it. Her career choices also are dependant on this very goal of hers. She wants to become a physician or a sportsman, and getting satisfaction from what she is doing is extremely important to her. This situation, however, poses certain problems for her future, however. These problems can be divided into several types: Economical: Amelia is not sure that her family will be able to get enough money to finish her studying in college, which is about 1000 miles away.

She also wants to help her mother to take care of her father and a younger brother. Social: There is no certainty that golfer is a good career for an African American. Personal: The girl has certain issues as to the color of her skin and, besides, she is not absolutely sure that physician is good profession for woman. Because of all the above-described circumstances, Amelia should probably best attend the college, which is nearby. In this way, she will not lose her job and will have an opportunity to help her family. Also, she will not have to stop her golf practices, and will have an opportunity to change her decision and become a golfer.

Later she will be able to attend a college she wants, and get a higher education of a physician. References: - Improved Career Decision Making (ICDM) in a Changing World, NOICC Garrett Park Press, 1996.
