An exceptional education through self-determination may has many positive opportunities as well as negative, such as the common application of stress and the pressure everyday to do ones best in every class and on every test. Personally, the weight of six advanced placement courses in my sophomore year left my mind weary and daily planner full. It became painfully obvious that if I was going to perform my junior year on the same level of excellence, I would have to find an outlet to channel my mind. I believe I found the perfect cure as I switched sports from basketball to cross country. The first day of practice was spent out on the open-road, related to the open-mind, as I just relaxed and let the six miles of open road run itself. It felt amazingly exhilarating as the long run came to an end.
Generally, in the mornings I was tired, but the running actually gave me more energy as I started my normal classes at 9: 55 in the morning. The long, independent journeys left me ready to do well on papers as I had already conquered a fast-run that morning. The meets that I attended on Saturdays at various parks throughout the metroplex excited me thoroughly. I had a specific goal when I entered these meets, to do my best and have no regrets. Now, this is a special sport which requires the mind to have complete control over the body, because if one can control the great amounts of pain associated with running five thousand meters at the cost of tears at the end of the race, they could in fact be the best. The races would start out with a long, horizontal line filled with the best runners grouped by the school at which they attend.
Whoever won these races was the best so pride became a great issue as everyone wanted to get to the finish line in the quickest amount of time no matter how great the cost. The last thing one hears consciously before the sprint-start are the words, Runners are you ready, runners are you set? , and then the gun sounds. Chaos cascades over the peaceful grass as it is stomped by hundreds of cleats already stained with grass and dirt from the last great race. The first few minutes are spent contemplating where to surge and where to retain that energy so that one does not pass out. Challenges assume throughout the course as one is forced to sprint up a steep hill, being assured that still no one passes them and tries to compromise with their honor. As one runs, they hear their name being screamed over and over yet know not who screams it because they are trying to set their mind afar away from their body is possible.
One of the greatest runners in history, Prefontane, once said, The reason why Im the best is because I can endure more pain than any other man in the world. None of the senses seem to function anymore as the body passes the 3200 meter mark. Although at this point, a smile seems to explode through the sweat on my face as I can sense hundreds of runners behind me. Then the mind is re accredited as it sees finish and both are in harmony again because they have no regrets. After this type of pain and commitment, I believe that the business school at UT will be just as challenging as I feel is only fit in my current state and I plan to absorb every minute detail no matter how trying. I will mentally prepare for this opportunity much like a prolific race, with absolute determination and confidence, because it will be a great race and at its termination, I want to once again be on top without any regrets.
