Charles Darwin, arguably the best contributor to the field of Biology, and possibly all of science. Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England on Feb 12, 1809. Darwin did not amount to much as a child, even for being the son of a successful and wealthy physician. His father told him that you care for nothing but shooting dogs, and rat-catching and you will be a disgrace to yourself and your family. (Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 97) Charles Darwin came up with the theory of natural selection that is now known as the explanation of evolution.
Darwin devoted much of his lifetime to the theory of natural selection, all though he did not publish his book On the origin of species by means of natural selection for about 20 years, for he wanted to have all of his research written down in his journal so that he could make a strong case to the scientific community on his theory of evolution. Darwin set sail on his ship the H. M. S Beagle to explore the cost of south America and to sail around the world. On his journey he stopped on the Galapagos islands of the cost of Venezuela where he wrote down and studied all the characteristics of all the plant, animals, fossils, and geological formations. After returning to England in 1837 he began to look at the all the information he collected on which was now called evolution.
Darwin found that members of a single species varied greatly in size, shape, color, and strength. He believed that most of these traits could be inherited. There are two important effects in natural selection, many developed organisms remained in their old habitats, where they struggled successfully, crowding them out of existence. In 1881 Darwin became very weak and could no longer work. In 1882 he died all though he never claimed to have proof of evolutionary change had occurred.
Recently there has been direct evidence of evolutionary change by an extraordinary amount of evidence gathered from a variety of science fields. Darwin is now buried among the great minds of England in Westminster Abbey.
