Chapter The general talks about how they won the battle. Henry tries to justify his decision of running away to ease his mind. He convinces himself that he did the right thing and believes that everyone who stayed in the battle was wrong for doing so. Henry then goes for a walk in the woods. When he threw a pinecone at a squirrel, it ran away from it. Henry comes to the conclusion that he reacted as nature would have wanted him to act.
The squirrel ran away from the pinecone which he sensed was dangerous and the battle was dangerous so Henry ran away from it. As he keeps walking he comes to an area in the woods where some trees are bent to make it look like a chapel. Then Henry sees a corpse lying, staring at him. Henry is afraid it will come to life so he retreats.
When he hears a loud noise, he runs toward the source. Henry sees a group of wounded soldiers and marches with them. After being questioned about how he was hurt, he realizes he does not have a reason to be with these people since he is not injured. Henry moves through the crowd.
He is ashamed he was not as brave as these people were who had stayed and fought. red badge of courage
