There are those who condemn television, the broadcasted shows, and the use of television in the home. While others believe, the world would be better off if television had never been invented at all. Only about one out of every two hundred television, shows are considered to have a harmful influence on those who viewed them. Still television is one of the best inventions of all times. Television enhances our lives in three ways; through its many practical uses, through shows that have positive affects on our lives, and through the educational values it brings to our children as they watch at home. No other invention is as versatile as the television. Everyday we are finding new ways to use the television, and there seems to be no limitations to its use. Television is used in some manner in every industry from automobiles too paper mills. Companies use television to advertise what they are selling, trading, or buying; it is a quick way for companies to reach millions of clients in a matter of seconds. When used with other equipment like cameras, remote robots, or linked with a satellite, the uses are endless.
The benefits of television to the medical field are overwhelming. For example, a television monitor connected to a flexible camera smaller then a ballpoint pen aids a doctor performing major heart surgery. In addition, thanks to television hundreds of lives are saved each day. For instance, bombs are now defused by remote control robots; controlled by a person sitting in front of a television monitor several blocks away in complete safety. In addition, the invention of television enhances our lives, through shows that have positive affects on our lives.
While the Jerry Springer, show is outrageous and often presented in bad taste; the show still presents a positive message to it viewers. Several studies conducted by The New Time showed that the topics on most talk shows are positive. Such topics as birth control, homelessness in America, and teenagers on drugs, are often the topics of discussion on the Montel Williams show. Then, there are news shows designed to bring us information that keeps us informed on what is happening in the rest of the world. While others shows are designed to bring us emergency information, such as live weather updates that often saves thousands of lives during bad weather. Other studies prove that no matter what kind of shows viewers watch, they have a positive impact on their lives 90 % of the time.
Finally, just as important as the invention of television or the affects shows have on our lives, is the educational value and influence it has on our children as they watch television at home. One of the most important aspects of teaching a pre-school age child is getting and keeping his or her attention. Although childrens attention span is often no more then four minutes long; studies have shown that television has the ability to grasp and hold childrens attention for as long as sixty minutes at a time. Programs such as Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood provides a foundation of words that parents and teachers can then build on. These programs teach through continuous verbal and visual playbacks.
Studies have also shown, children learn at least two new words each day while watching television at home. In conclusion, there are those that do not understand the total value the invention of television has on our lives each day.
