They have got five daughters, Jane (the eldest), Elizabeth, Mary, Lydia and Kitty. The family lives in Longbourn. There is a house near the Bennets, it? s called Netherfield. A rich bachelor named Bingley rents it.
He is accompanied by his two sisters, Mr Hurst, husband of one of his sisters and Fitzwilliam Darcy, a friend. Mrs Bennet hopes that one of her daughters will marry Bingley, because her daughters will only have a small share of the inheritance when their father dies. All of it will go to a cousin of theirs, Mr Collins. Very soon there is a ball and Jane thinks that Bingley is more than nice; she is very charmed by him. Bingley likes Jane too. Elizabeth doesn?
t like Mr Darcy at all; she overhears a conversation by Bingley and Darcy and hears that she doesn? t charm Darcy at all. One day Jane goes to the Bingleys to pay them a visit. She falls ill and can? t go home for a long time. Elizabeth misses her sister and while visiting the Bingleys, she is invited to stay there as well.
Miss Bingley thinks at first that Darcy is interested in Lizzy, but when she finds out he isn? t interested in Lizzy she can get along quite well with her. On the other hand the sisters think that the family Bennet are not wealthy enough, so that Jane can marry Bingley. When Jane gets better the sisters both return to Longbourn.
After only a few days their cousin, Mr Collins, comes by. He is the one who will inherit Mr Bennet? s property. He is a clergyman and owes his position to Lady Catherine De Bourgh. He means to marry one of the Bennet? s daughters, so they can inherit some of their own property.
He asks Lizzy and she refuses. He is surprised that she says no, because he thinks it is the best offer she can get. He? s afraid of making a fool of himself so the next day he asks Charlotte Lucas, Lizzy? s best friend. She says yes, because she is not too pretty and she doesn?
t have that much money and she thinks it will be the only offer she can get. At Meryton there are a lot of officers stationed. One of them is Mr Wickham. Lizzy gets acquainted with him.
He knows Darcy from when they were young and tells that Darcy is the one who prohibited him inheriting of Fitzwilliam? s father. Lizzy believes it all and she starts to hate Darcy more and more. When Wickham starts to like another girl, Lizzy still gets along with him. Everyone expects that Jane and Bingley will get engaged, but then Jane gets a letter from Caroline, Bingley? s sister, with the sad news that all of them will go to London.
Jane doesn? t know why he leaves without telling her a word and she is inconsolable. Elizabeth is going to visit the newly married Collinses and there she meets Darcy again. She hates him even more, because someone told her that it was him who told Bingley to break up with Jane. He asks her to marry him, but she refuses, she can? t marry a man who ruins her sister?
s happiness. She also tells him what Wickham told her about Darcy. The next day he leaves for London, he leaves her a letter, which explains everything about Wickham, Jane and Bingley. He didn? t know that Jane loved Bingley so much. He tells a whole different story about Wickham, he tried to seduce Georgiana, Darcy?
s sister. Lizzy feels very ashamed, now she knows all this. A few weeks later she is going to make a trip with her aunt and uncle and they happen to visit Darcy? s home in Derbyshire. The housekeeper is really proud of her master and tells them about him, she also tells that he isn?
t coming home yet. Then he suddenly comes home from London, Lizzy is very confused, but Darcy behaves very nicely. She hopes that they can get on speaking terms again, but when she receives a letter that Lydia has run away with Mr Wickham, she is afraid that that will never happen, because of the shame that lies on the family now. When she just heard the news, Darcy comes by to pay a visit and she tells him everything about Wickham and Lydia. Without anyone knowing Darcy goes to London, to persuade Wickham to marry Lydia. Lizzy?
s uncle is in London too and from her aunt Lizzy hears that it was Mr Darcy who made the marriage happen. Lydia is the first one of the daughters who marries and her mother, the foolish woman, is very happy. Mr. Bingley returns at Netherfield and starts to see Jane again; very soon they are engaged. A week after the engagement, Lady Catherine De Bourgh pays Lizzy a visit and she tells Lizzy not to marry her nephew, because he is from a better family. Lizzy gets quite angry and she says that if he would ask her that she wouldn?
t say no at all. When Darcy hears this from his aunt he asks Lizzy to marry him again and this time she says yes. Jane and Lizzy get married the same day. So finally three of the five sisters get married after all. Theme The theme is except for Elizabeth? s prejudices and Darcy?

Lady Catherine de Bourgh says to Lizzy that she isn? t good enough for her family, so she can? t marry Mr Darcy. Everyone is influenced by his or her background.
Love is another motive. All the love stories have got a happy ending. The Bennet girls in this story only marry the man they love, that? s different from normal society. The? best?
marriage of the Bennet family is the marriage between Lizzy and Darcy; it? s the most unexpected and they struggled a lot with their own feelings. The? worst marriage is between Lydia and Wickham. Wickham is forced to marry Lydia. Lydia loves Wickham in the beginning, but after a while she becomes very unhappy.

t good enough and he uses his influence at Bingley to convince him that Jane isn? t the right party for him. You can see his arrogance when he is proposing to Lizzy, he knows for sure that she will not refuse. Lizzy accuses him of behaving badly towards Wickham and Darcy doesn? t say a word about it, because he is hurt in his pride. He is also modest, like when he helps Lydia with Wickham he doesn?
t tell anyone about it. He? s sensible as well; he marries Lizzy because he loves her although she? s from a lower social class. Jane Bennet, the eldest daughter can only see the good in people.
In contrast with Lizzy she? s compliant, good-natured, sweet-tempered and timid. When she hears that Bingley has left his house and is in London now, she doesn? t do anything else then cry, but she isn? t angry with him. ? s a friendly and social type. Bingley is influenced by other people, like Darcy and his sisters. He loves Jane, but listens to other people what to do. But luckily in the end Jane and Bingley get married after all. The two of them love each other. Lydia is a young naive girl.
Her only interests are men and glamour. She loves to get attention, for example on the balls. She doesn? t have manners; she doesn? t behave the right way on the balls. She doesn?
t think about the consequences of her behaviour for herself and her family, by running away with Wickham. Wickham is a charmer. He abuses his old friends to get better himself. Wickham has debts, but he acts like he has a lot of money. He tries to marry a rich woman.
He tells Lydia he wants to marry her, but he doesn? t have any intention to do that. Mrs Bennet only cares about her daughters getting married. She always says the wrong things in the wrong way in the wrong place. She doesn?
t mean to be like that, but is just in her nature. Opinion I liked reading the book, although sometimes it gets kind of difficult. All the people that have a part in it with similar names were sometimes difficult to remember. I wanted to read the book, because I watched it on television some time ago. I liked it because the settings were very good.
While reading the book I had an image of the things how they go and so on. The book and the film were quite similar. I? m sure that I? d like to read more books by Jane Austen or see some more of the movies that are made (or both of course. ) The story itself is a little bit sweet, everything has an happy end, not like nowadays, but that can be nice sometimes as well.
There were some characters that really annoyed me, like Mrs Bennet, because she is behaving so ridiculously. And Mr Collins because he is so arrogant towards Lizzy and he has nothing to offer. It could also be that they acted so well and on TV (I didn? t like them there either) that I already knew what to expect of them before I started to read the book. So I was influenced by the television.
