The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O. F. A. H. ) is Ontario s largest charitable non-profit organization that is not funded by the government. The O. F.

A. H. plays a very important role in the province s fish and wildlife conservation. The organization believes that it is important to preserve Ontario s fish and wildlife resources. The O. F.

A. H. is key in educating a vast population of Ontarians as young as six years old, in the importance of aquatic ecosystems, fishing techniques, etc. Founded in the 1920 s, the O.

F. A. H. has grown to include 79 000 members and a professional staff of biologists. Many members include themselves in campaigns and programs that the organization runs. Becoming a member (youth may join for as little as $ 24. 50 for one year) includes benefits such as receiving a free subscription to Ontario OUT OF DOORS and receiving the Angler and Hunter Hotline (10 issues per year).

Members also receive discounts at certain hotels, car rentals, and more! Funding is received through membership fees, donations, and corporate sponsors. The O. F. A. H.

also holds social fundraisers such as their Conservation Dinners (these can be found in: Midland, Niagara, Owen Sound, Peterborough, Glanbrook, Ganaraska, Trenton, Bancroft, Kenora, Atikokan, Dryden, Simcoe, Belleville, Strathroy, Fort Frances, Allison, Grimsby, Dunnville, Thunder Bay). O. F. A. H. Role in Conservation The O.

F. A. H. s main goal is to conserve fish and wildlife resources and habitats. The organization runs many programs to ensure that their goals are met.

There are a few Invading Species Awareness and Control Programs, such as Zebra Busters and Project Purple. These programs are used to educate the public on species that are taking over certain forms of wildlife. Project Purple, for example, concentrates on educating the public in regards to the purple loosestrife, a weed that takes over wetlands by choking out native vegetation and, ultimately, creates a habitat in which wildlife cannot survive. Zebra Busters concentrates on educating the public in regards to zebra mussel, a small clam-like creature that had spread by the thousand throughout many lakes in Ontario. These zebra mussel do clean the water by feeding on algae, but they have become out of control and are attaching themselves to all the rocks and hard surfaces in many of Ontario s lakes, especially in the Kawarthas. The O.

F. A. H. created a Travelling Teacher Program in 1991. This program brought wildlife conservation education to over 20 000 elementary schools in Ontario. As a result, Waterways Habitat was created as an extension of the Travelling Teacher Program.

This program includes hands-on education of aquatic and shoreline environments through games, exploration, and actual fishing. For information on this program, contact: George Axcell c / o Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Phone (705) 748 - 6324 ext. 246 Fax (705) 748 - 9577 The O. F. A. H. also has a Deer Save Action Plan, which was created as a result of harsh winters.

Because of certain weather conditions, many deer have died (more than 60 % of the deer population in 1958 - 59 and 1970 - 71) because it is just too hard for them to live of off their stored fat. This plan was created to raise funds in order to be able to feed the deer in emergencies. The O. F. A.

H. has also been involved in wildlife re introduction. The O. F.

A. H. has reintroduced native species, such as wild turkeys, to the province. It also has plans to reintroduce ring-necked pheasants and the native bobwhite quail.

At the moment, the organization is reintroducing elk to its original habitat within Ontario. Approximately 100 elk have been released near Sudbury so far. Pitch-in Week is also one of the O. F.

A. H. s original programs. Between May 3 and 9, people throughout Ontario will be walking through all sorts of places such as parks and ravines, picking up litter. Created about 30 years ago, Pitch-in Week has become a national project. The O.

F. A. H. has started focussing on wildlife and agriculture and their relationship.

The O. F. A. H.

and many other agricultural organizations have been concentrating on helping each other out by enhancing each other s animal habitats with each other s resources. The O. F. A.

H. has started many other programs such as the Harvest share/Hunters for the Hungry. This involves many hunters and fishermen, the latter donating small portions of their catch, or the former donating small portions of their meats to those who can no afford these types of meals very often. The O. F. A.

H. has also had a Become an Outdoors Woman program. This program is for women only and has focused on women who would like to improve their outdoor skills and knowledge. The O. F. A.

H. s Voice The O. F. A. H. s voice is one well heard, and has much influence on important decisions that may have a great effect on any environmental factors.

They influence choices made by the government, such as cutbacks directed towards sea protection control programs (i. e. Sea Lamprey Control program), native hunting and fishing rights and land claims. The organization has had a strong voice in the decision of deer farming.

In 1991, it called upon the government to stop deer farming for five years. The O. F. A. H. compensated operators for the five-year term.

It has also had the government conduct environmental assessments of the deer farming industry. Current Programs The O. F. A. H. has many programs and issues that need to be dealt with right now.

One concern is the government s removal of the spring bear hunt. The organization has fought for a long time to keep the bear hunt in place. Why increase the bear population in Ontario? According to the government s own records, there is quite a large and stable bear population.

The O. F. A. H. has rallied on this cause, but despite their efforts, the government has banned the bear hunt. There have been no plans to back down from this fight.

In fact, the O. F. A. H. has consulted layers in this matter in the hopes of finding a way to reinstate the bear hunt. The O.

F. A. H. is now researching Lake Erie s ecosystem. In Lake Erie, fish stocks have fallen (walleye that numbered more than 120 million in the late 1980 s are down to 50 million), and there has been a great decrease in nutrient levels.

There is great concern that zebra mussel have reduced the amount of nutrients available to other species by such large amounts and that fish stocks have been reduced greatly due to lack of feeding resources. Though water like this is clean, clear, and more drinkable, it is not always healthy for fish and other wildlife. There has been an increase in antis (organizations or individuals against fishing and hunting). This concerns the O.

F. A. H. because, for some, fishing is a way of life, and for others, an enjoyable recreational activity. These organizations and individuals attend fishing tournaments to create problems (some actually go as far as scuba diving underneath boats or throwing rocks to scare fish away). A new organization from Europe called PETA is a great threat to the fishing industry.

It has gotten the attention of the media and is well funded. The O. F. A.

H. has high hopes of being able to counteract this group for the safe continuation of fishing. One of the O. F.

A. H. s most recent plans is to encourage more effective forms of law enforcement in regards to conservation. The O. F. A.

H. has encouraged more training for the ministry s officers, so that it might be legal for them to carry firearms and make legal arrests just as police officers do, and to carry out searches and seizures. It would also like to see more volunteer enforcement permitted. All this would increase the amount and quality of conservation enforcement. In conclusion, the O.

F. A. H. has been greatly involved in the conservation of wildlife and fish habitats and resources. It has fought for the rights of all Ontario citizens in many ways, ranging from small fishing bills to native land claims. As a non-government funded organization, with a lot of power over what goes and what doesn t in the fishing and hunting industries, it has had great impact on both industries.

Because the O. F. A. H. represents its members, all it has and ever will fight for has come right from the general public. Thanks to the O.

F. A. H. , many laws have been changed or bills have been stopped for the enjoyment and / or well being of its members and the general. The O. F. A.

H. has saved many forms of wildlife throughout the years, and we, the public, owe much to this hard working organization. I believe that the O. F. A.

H. has done so much for the public. I would like to join this organization because it has accomplished many important goals. The programs that the organization runs are well done and important.

I would like to be involved in such accomplishments for I believe that the wilderness in Ontario is and important asset to us. The wilderness offers so much beauty, recreational activity, and a countless number of other assets that I think it needs to be preserved as much as possible.
