The captivating story by Thomas Wolfe "The Child by Tiger" exemplifies the natural animalisticqualities of human nature. Beneath the words, the reader uncovers new discovery of good and evil and the close relationship they share. Through the eyes of Mr. Shepperton, this tale of how human beings possess both good and evil reveals "man's evil innocence, " a paradox that becomes very clear and much the same. The Shepperton's are delighted with their new Negro man, Dick Prosser, for " he could cook, tend to the furnace, hebrew how to drive a car... " and he "was a deeply religious man" while being very hard worker... During the day, he reads from the Bible and quotes the scriptures, (which proves he is an intelligent Negro for he can read).
The desire of being a good person is in the heart Dick Prosser, but... Dick spills into the darkness and "man's evil innocence. .".. The religious man, the hard worker, the disciplined and very intelligent Dick shows hints of "an unknown demon. " He chooses to smother in the rage of violence. Prosser observes the hints fromthe Shepperton's cook, Pansy Harris, and he believes her husband is beating Pansy. In an attempt to do what is right, Dick submits to his rage set goodness free and kills Harris' husband.
This action causes ricochet event which leads to several killings by the very religious man, the good... The only good and decent action by the townspeople is to catch this wild animal, Dick Prosser, andale an example of him. The townspeople, whom only a day before had such admiration for the Shepperton's new Negro, had now hunted, brutally killed, and displayed Dick's body in a store window. There The goodness is not restored; in fact, the people and Dick strive to pursue goodness and find that evil lurks in its darkened shadows. Good and evil intermingle, one spilling intothe other, and proves the "two worlds together -- a tiger and a child.
