Tonight I went to my first concert. I saw the Duquesne University Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Robert C. Cameron conducted both the Symphony and Band.
The Wind Symphony began the night by playing the Dedication Overture and then proceeded on to what was my favorite piece of the concert, Old American Country Set. This set consisted of five parts, my favorite being the last. It was called Cornhuskin? Hornpipe. I felt this piece was wonderfully played. I had a hard time believing that a piece this country could be played on such instruments.
I was very impressed. After the intermission, the symphonic band came out to play a few pieces that were not to my liking. Although the highpoint in their performance was when Walter Mays made an appearance and talked about his piece Dreamcatcher. He gave us an insight about how he designed this piece. It was very interesting to hear what goes on in a composer? s head when he is creating music.
I very much enjoyed hearing Mr. Mays talk about the events that took place to turn the different environment around him into such a work of art. Overall, I must say that I truly had a wonderful time at the Concert. I was fortunate enough to preview some music that I haven? t been that exposed to before and look forward to
