More Joy In Heaven Chapter 1, Pg. 11 The dawn of a windy, snowy Christmas witnessed Senator Maclean, a selfish, pink faced powerful banker who anxiously awaits the arrival of 10 year inmate Kip Caley and Father Butler who instilled deep, peaceful, confident, qualities in several prisoners including Kip Caley. As he had previously, Father Butler returned this time with Caley. After a tearful goodbye, Caley left with the Senator towards town. On the way Kip expressed how he yearned for freedom. Caley seeing a field with a farm house regaled to the Senator how he and his friend Joe Foley had hid there after their escape. Chapter 2, Pg. 17 Kip comes to his house to find reporters banging on his door.
A young boy approaches him cautiously claiming that Kip is his Uncle. When arriving in the house Kip reunites with his mother and brother, his mother a small plump woman, and his brother a Doctor. Kip claims that he is a new man to try and comfort his family. Dennis, Kips brother, explains how he had changed his last name to avoid ridicule, in which Kip did not find this offensive. The small boy named Tim was kips nephew, and Kip was made a spectacle in front of Tims friends. Three of the reporters was let in from outside to interview them, one of them being Smiley, a reporter who had done Kips story 10 years ago.
Failing to get any information out of Kip, they leave and Kip sneaks out the back door to get some fresh air and see the city as a free man. Chapter 3, Pg. 28 Kip awakes the next morning eager to go outside and pursue his new job. After having breakfast with his Mom he is full of confidence because they had bonded. While walking as a freeman he is shaken by seeing himself exploited on the front page of a news paper. Frustrated with anger he goes to buy cigarettes where he encounters an encouraging clerk who offers him a tin of cigarettes, and wishes him luck in the future. Confidence restored Kip continues on towards the hotel.
Chapter 4, Pg. 31 Kip, after confronting an old ex-boxer named Billy in the main lobby who confuses him as a new boxer, finally encounters his new boss Mr. Jenkins. Jenkins, an over weight insomniac, greets Kip very eager to employ him. The job description is someone who will enforce tone and authority in his new restaurant and showroom. Kip unsure about the job due to his past history, refuse the job until he has talked it over with the Senator. Chapter 5, Pg. 35 Kip arrives at the Senators office still pondering over the thought of having such a social job.
When confronting the Senator the Bishop Murray is present, who is friendly toward Kip, but also very unsure and curious, fearing scandal. Senator takes Kip and the Bishop to lunch where Kip feels extremely comfortable because the subject on every bodies mind is not him. Here in the club Kip feels totally oblivious to everyone giving him the image he wants. The Senator assures Kip That Mr. Jenkins will fix him up, and not worry about the job and the skating carnival exposing Kips. Chapter 6, Pg. 38 Kip stalls going to work until he finally builds up enough courage to enter the hotel.
Jenkins offers him an elaborate room if Kip decides to take the job. Still unsure about his employment he is approached by a bulky man named Steinbeck who tells Kip not to question the job and to see it as a way to make a living. During a drink with Steinbeck and Jenkins, Kip is approached by Smiley learning that a fellow inmate named Connick, who he respected, had shot himself. Kip although not sentimental towards inmates sells his story to Smiley and has the money donated to the Connick family.
At the suggestion of being on the parole board, Kip looks to see if his associates mock him, but still yearns to be a mediator between the law and prisoners. Chapter 7, Pg. 43 Kip picks up his new suit and feels the desire to show it to someone close. Upon arriving at the house Kip finds out from Dennis that their mother has worn heart muscles and may only live for a couple more months. Dennis fights with Kip about him being all over the media and tells him to leave the city. After the confrontation Dennis leaves, and Kip takes in some simple friendship from Tim who asks him to sign a baseball for a friend, making Tims adoration precious to Kip. Chapter 8, Pg. 46 Upon arrival at the skating carnival Kip meets the Senators daughter Ellen, a short round faced woman.
During the performance Ellen poses questions about Kips previous criminal activities which makes Kip very uncomfortable. Also adding to the confusion and frustration of Kip is the lights and faces of all the people around him, all of them being focused on him. Kip excuses himself from the scene to the dismay of Ellen who wanted him to stay longer. Chapter 9, Pg. 50 After leaving the carnival Kip stops at a lunch counter to have a sandwich and read the newspaper. Two boys arrive dressed up and a little drunk.
They tease the waitress, a pretty dark haired girl named Julie, by taunting her with money. This reminds Kip that he must solve this situation as he had done so many times in prison. He throws the two boys out and walks Julie home, on which upon their arrival he kisses her. She runs away with kip charging after her to here first floor apartment.
She wants him to leave but Kip keeps on talking into the night. Kip learns that Julie used to be a model but got sick of the high life and bad treatment. Kip leaves finally realizing that it felt great to talk to someone he was totally anonymous to. Chapter 10, Pg. 59 The night of New Years Eve at the hotel Kip becomes nervous seeing his face on placet's all over town, Kip goes and buys new shoes for Julie and then heads for the hotel. Crowds of people swarm around Kip making him feel the whole city is reaching for him.
Among the faces is the Greek restaurant owner who praises him for throwing out the two boys at his lunch counter, he also saw the mayor who said to come and visit him sometime. After he talks with Ms. Taylor he realizes that he did not kill people during bank robberies because he like people to much. Chapter 11, Pg. 64 During the New Years Eve party Kip meets up with convicts, Joe Foley and Ike Kerrman. While reminiscing about old times Joe keeps questioning Kip about how he was going to take advantage of his situation to make Kip rich from criminal activity. Kip denies any wrong doing and is rushed to the stage to make a speech for the crowd.
He is compared to the Prodigal Son and says that this is the best night of his life and he will remember it always. Chapter 12, Pg. 68 Kip is visited by Father Butler after escaping his praising crowd. The unhappy looking Father Butler is concerned about ips well being and wants him to come and work as a gardener for him until things settle down a bit. Kip refuses and talks about how he would like to be on the parole board, Father Butler agrees to talk to the Senator. Father Butler regales to Kip how much hope and encouragement Kips story has brought to the other prisoners, but warns Kip about the dark gifts and how things might not go on as well as they are now.
Chapter 13, Pg. 72 Judge Ford seeing Kips pictures everywhere is disgusted with societies actions and considers it a mockery to law and order. His curiosity gets the best of him and he goes to the Cornet Hotel to see Kip. Hoping to be unseen he is recognized by Kip immediately. Judge ford gets ready to leave but Kip stops him to tell him that there are no hard feelings and how he would like to be on the parole board. After justifying himself and his position to the Judge, Ford tells Kip that he is crazy and leaves the Hotel. Chapter 14, Pg. 76 After the encounter with the Judge Kip returns knowing that the Judge has to deal with the Senator.
He finishes his story about Big Louie to the two boys he was sitting with when Julie arrives. She tells Kip that he has encouraged her to go back into modelling. They talk for a while admiring a picture of Kip making a speech at the policemen's ball. While walking to Julies place she tells of her family and how she ran away from her divorced family realizing that neither parents really wanted her Kip after spending time with Julie realizes that he has the best thing in the world right in front of him.
Chapter 15, Pg. 82 As Kip Is leaving the Hotel Jenkins complains about Kip not hanging around the hotel anymore, he tells Jenkins he is going to a Liquor Cure that the Senator is having. He goes to Julies to ask if shell go with him but she decides to wait at her apartment. When arriving at the Senators he meets the senators wife, and she is very polite and nice o him. There are many important people at the Senators party, but when Kip talk to the Senator about the parole board he doesnt have much to say but for Kip to go see the Judge. On his way out he sees Ellen and makes a pass at her, she doesnt resist, Kip feels like going to see the Senator right then and there. Chapter 16, Pg. 88 Kip goes to see Judge Ford to try to win his friendship and show that there are no hard feelings.
Upon arrival Kip pleads his situation to the Judge, and tries to explain how he would like to be on the parole board. After an interruption from the Mayor, the Judge becomes irritated by the way the Mayor treats and talks to him around Kip as if to say be nice to the convict. With this the Judge points out that Kip is being trained and used so everyone is delighted, and so that there is mor joy on earth than in heaven. Kip becomes enraged comparing the Judge to Joe Foley who is also a non-believer in Kip. After ripping off his shirt to show the Judge his scars he was told how he was gagged and blood was drawn during his beating, Kip leaves the office with the Judge making the point that Kip is filled with violence and is a bomb waiting to go off. Chapter 17, Pg. 94 After his confrontation with the Judge, Kip wonders if he really is violent.
He assures himself that he is in control after lashing out at Joe Foley who called him a phoney who feeds off other convicts, but at the last minute restraining the hit. After lending Joe his car he goes to the bar and dreams he has made a bargain with Foley. Ki feels embarrassed when Steinbeck and his friends notice that Kip has no shirt on, and that they want to see his scars. After a fight with Julie, Kip realizes that Julie loves him more than just someone to talk to and reassures himself that anyone who could feel this sense of security could not be violent.
He believes that he should do the work he wants to, and that the Judge cant stop him. Chapter 18, Pg. 101 Kip sets off to start helping his fellow convicts, he lends out money as well as advice. Mr. Jenkins is not happy with the non-paying crowd that Kip is bringing with him. After taking a man in who stole a ring to support his family, Kip goes with Julie to see Father Butler to make sure he has made the right decision and not gone against the people who trusted him.
After talking with Father Butler Kip and Julie stop at a stream on the way home where he proposes that they get married. Kip thinks about his new situation and begins to feel a puzzling new freedom. Chapter 19, Pg. 106 Upon awaking in his room the next morning Kip encounters Mr. Jenkins who does some tests to see how strong Kip is. He is taken to Jenkins private gum where he wrestles with Steinbeck, and over does it with Steinbeck almost seriously injuring him. Jenkins tells Kip either he wrestles for him or he loses his job at the hotel.
Later, after stumbling into an old hangout where he is mocked and teased by Foley and old friends Kip realizes he can get the Senator to talk to Jenkins about his job, due to the fact that the Senator has great influence over Jenkins, his lease. Chapter 20, Pg. 111 Upon arriving at the Senators house Kip is given the cold shoulder by Ellen as if she had no interest in him ever. He is lead upstairs by the amid only to find that the senator is sick in bed. After Kip had confided his problem to the Senator, he receives the advice to go wrestle for Jenkins even if it is a crooked match. Kip protests against this saying that he and the Senator are letting peoples dreams down which they had built up. Chapter 21, Pg. 115 Kip comes back to the tavern where he waits for Jenkins.
While waiting he tries to get some attention from some customers but only succeeds when talking about his bank robberies. After Jenkins arrive they talk. Jenkins tells Kip that he is being used for glory and that now he is old news and people are sick of looking at him, people are now looking for something new. Disbelieving this Kip goes crazy ranting and raving about him and Lazarus. He starts walking blindly out of town where he is aggressive towards a drunk who begs for change. Chapter 22, Pg. 123 Kip returns to Julies apartment only to find her sleeping.
She gets up and lets Kip in only becoming upset about Kip being mad seeing some roses she got. Kip explains how he has been used and asks Julie if she only went out with him because she found out how famous he was. Julie admits that she was excited at first, but really liked how gentle he was towards her. Kop realizes that something has to be done about they way he has been taken advantage of and used. Julie, although agreeing to marry him, worries about what Kip will do and prays for him silently.
Chapter 23, Pg. 128 When Kip awakes Julie has already left. While glancing out the window he sees Foley and Kerrman approaching the apartment building. They had come to give Kip his things from the hotel and Foley gloated how he was right about how he was being used by everyone. Foley tries to convince Kip to pull off a robbery with him, Kerrman, and another convict named Ike. At first Kip agrees but then snaps back to reality saying no. He figures out his purpose and compares it to the Prodigal sons story.
He tells Foley and Kerrman to leave, but Foley says he is sure hell see Kip later. Chapter 24, g. 132 Julie arrives back at the apartment distressed that Kip had let Kerrman and Foley into her apartment, at this Kip erupts saying that he has no place to call his own and considers it his apartment to. To change the subject Julie talks about a fur coat she wants. Kip says that he will get her everything she will every need, and at this Julie gets the impression Kip is going back to bank robbing. Kip denies this and they both go out to dinner, Julie still fearing for Kip inside her. Chapter 25, Pg. 134 When Kip and Julie got back to the apartment, Kip finds out that his mother is very sick and will die soon.
Kip leaves Julie and continues to his mothers when Foley and Kerrman catch up to him still trying to convince hi to help with the robbery. Kip blows up at them but they continue on with them. When they arrived at Kips they stayed outside. When Kip arrives inside Dennis and the Priest are there, and Dennis asks what is wrong with Kip. His mother is happy for Kip and says that she is happy to die, when asked to say a prayer Kip struggles but does. After a discussion with the priest Dennis asks Kip to come and see him later now that there mother had died they had things to talk about, Kip agrees and leaves.
Outside he fights physically with Foley but then lets him up, apologizes and go to get some beer. Chapter 26, Pg. 140 When Julie comes out of the movie and arrives at her apartment Kip, Foley, and Kerrman are all making plans for the robbery. She runs out of the apartment and down the cathedral to consult Father Butler. When he is awoken she tells him what is going on. Julie wonders if she has betrayed Kip, but Butler tells her if Kip screws up everyone generosity will turn to hate and no one will have a chance for parole again. When they reach the apartment they are not there, and only the rubbed out plan that Foley had written on the table clothe remained.
Father Butler says that If he can Have Foley and Kerrman picked up then Kip wont go on with it, Julie waits for the return of Kip and Father Butler. Chapter 27, Pg. 145 When Julie awoke they next morning Kip was making coffee in the kitchen. She was so glad to see him and told him that she had seen Father Butler. At this Kip flipped out and asked for what she had told the Father, Julie replied that she was scared Kip was going to get into trouble and the Father was going to have Foley and Kerrman picked up. Kip said that they hadnt and he had, it was very embarrassing. Kip calls Julie a stool pigeon and a traitor, Julie was feeling so much mental pain that she wanted Kip to hit her, but instead he realized the time and ran out of the apartment.
Chapter 28, Pg. 148 Kip runs out into the street and grabs a taxi and heads down to Foley's apartment to tell them that the whole thing is a setup, and for them to call it off. When he gets there he cant find Foley or Kerrman so he heads down to the Bank. Upon arrival he sees Foley and Kerrman in a car, he runs over and tells them its a set up and as they turn to leave there is a gun shot which kills kerrman. The next one to go off hits Foley who falls to the ground. To protect his friend Kip grabs Foley's gun telling the cops to stop firing. Kip shoots a policeman and starts to run.
After jumping fences and running down alleys Kip realizes he has been shot in the shoulder and hides in a cellar where he hear all the commotion upstairs and people talking about what he had done, some in disbelief and some wanting to help hunt Kip down. Kip crawls his way back to Julies apartment where he is gunned down by the cops in Julies arms, Julie dies and Father Butler Yells at the crowd saying they now had their wonder man. Chapter 29, Pg. 29 Kip is kept alive with blood transfusions and stimulants. They people and the Police force want to keep Kip alive long enough so they can hang him to get back at Kip for cheating their trust and humiliating them.
Kip is asked to talk but says nothing, even when his brother Dennis came in he remained silent. That night as he died Kip thought to himself with a smile that he had got back at everyone, he had made peace with Julie and settled everything with everyone else by cheating them out of a hanging. He was buried by his brother the next morning, and the Bishop Murray had him buried in unconsecrated ground.
