The Moby Dick Moby Dick The character of Ishmael had a critical impact on the novel. Ishmael s character allows the reader to relate to a love for nature and the earth, as well as a feeling of inner peace and serenity. His attitude, thoughts, and feelings permitted me, as the reader, to explore two similar roles in my life. When reading the novel, I as the reader, connected the character of Ishmael to my mother; therefore, more clearly understood Ishmael s attitude. Ishmael s character gives the reader someone to relate to and to identify. This character let me experience the novel in a different manner because of my relation with my mother.
Ishmael is a pleasing character, who plays the role of the main character as well as narrator. He is a common man who has a love for the sea and goes to it to clear his mind whenever he feels down or feels that it is a damp, drizzly November in his soul. As for his physical appearance, he doesn t really specify. However, one might assume that he is a middle-aged man and probably holds the characteristics of the stereotypical seaman. But, what the character lacks in physical description, he makes up for with a full personality that his described extensively throughout the book. Ishmael is a man who seeks what is best described as inner peace.
He is very content with himself when on the water. He also has a great love for being a seaman. He joins the crew of the Pequod to satisfy his longing to be back on the ocean, but as it turns out, the particular voyage he is to set out on is not what he had suspected. For this ship would be commanded by a half-crazed captain in a desperate search for a white whale. Over all, Ishmael is definitely the most civilized and wise man in the story. Mothers play a primary role in life.
They are the narrators to your story and life. She is always there telling you what is right or wrong, or what path is best for me. Ishmael is comparable because he told Ahab his opinion on different issues throughout the novel. My mother is also like Ishmael because she seeks inner peace she is always looking for what is best in her life. She wants what will benefit her the most and will not waste her time in areas that will not help with anything. When Ishmael goes on the Pequod to get back with the sea that reminded me of my mother because she goes and plays tennis to feel at one with herself.
My mother is often described as a wise, organized, intelligent, and satisfying person who is always there to lend a hand. Ishmael and my mother made me realize a relation between fiction and non-fiction. By relating Ishmael to my mother throughout the novel, I understood where Ishmael was coming from with his thoughts, feelings, and attitudes. I would suggest that everyone should relate a novel s main character to a real person because it helped so much with the comprehension of the novel.
