Mark Twain: Structure Mark Twain has been criticized for many years on his loose structure in his novels. Structure did not seem to conform Twain? s style. ? The plot in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, is not tight knit, yet is a series of adventures strung together. ? It has both unity time and place along with a unique unity amongst the characters.

Organization of Tom? s life in St. Petersburg over a period of several months during summer. Just to add some spice, Twain occasionally added flashbacks. For instance, when the boys suddenly turn up for their funerals after Jackson Island, then later explains how they got of the island and went to church.

Twain often times took a couple chapters to explain things in great detail, while other times he then has many consecutive days. For example when he explains everything that happened before Muff Potter? s trial. Tom? s pranks set the mood for the novel and how things would end up playing out in the end. Tom would often play hooky from school and go swimming, steal, and play with his friends.

Tricks were one of Tom? s favorite things to do, like when he tricked his friends into whitewashing the fence for him, and so many more in church and school. In Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain decided to divide the story into four parts. The first section of the book is mostly about Tom? s courtship with Becky Thatcher. Tom and Becky had a great adventures together in the cave and they also fell in love.

From the moment Tom laid eyes on Becky, he has been doing anything and everything to get Becky? s attention. Finally when Tom wins Becky? s heart, he then loses it.

Tom could only talk about Amy Lawrence, his x-girlfriend and Becky? s love was soon gone. When Becky? s rejection caused him to run away and become a pirate. Tom did not go very far with his pirate game before he forgot about his sweetheart. Tom and Joe loved playing pirate and Twain spent much time covering his adventures.

Later in the story, Tom and Becky become a hot item again. When Becky and Tom are lost for a several days together in the cave. Tom took great care of Becky while they were lost and Becky truly liked how Tom was in the cave. The second main part in the story took place on Jackson?

s Island. Tom was extremely angry how life was treating him at home so he went to Jackson? s Island to escape his problems. After Becky? s rejection and Aunt Polly mistreating him, he felt it was best if he just left. On Jackson?

s Island, he played pirates with his best friends, Huck and Joe. Then the boys went home to see their funerals, where the climax in the story takes place. Then in the third part of the story, Tom and Huck go to the graveyard because of some superstitions. Tom and Huck were trying to cure wart, by Spunk-water and a dead cat. They thought Tom might be dying, until they found out he was only trying to play hooky. Then they witness a murder committed by Injun Joe and then Injun Joe tried to blame Muff Potter for the death.

Tom knew he had to tell someone what he had seen, or his conscience would get the best of him, but he was scared. Finally Tom got enough gut to tell what he had seen, and testify in court against Injun Joe, when Injun Joe ran and escaped out of the court yard. The buried treasure and Injun Joe are the fourth main part to Twain? s story.

Tom and Huck went out looking for a buried treasure. Then when the boys were exploring a old abandoned house, Injun Joe appears with two other men. As Tom and Huck discover the treasure, Injun Joe and his men watched and saw the treasure. Then both Tom and Huck barely escape Injun Joe, but now lost their treasure to Injun Joe. While everything is happening Huck is separate from Tom. Huck followed Injun Joe, while Tom was lost in the cave.

Along the way, while Huck was following Injun Joe, Huck saves the Widow Douglass from Injun Joe. Then Injun Joe died and the boys went back and found the lost treasure. ? Many of the incidents throughout the book are not important in themselves and could have been left out and others substituted. ? For example, of the Sunday school prizes, the battle between the poodle and the pinch bug, the day of the exam at school, and the different pledges made in the novel. All these incidents add realism and life to the book, which give Twain great material to satire. Twain has unity in his setting, timing, and characters, which allows Twain to use several reoccurring themes through the book.

By doing so, Twain is able to tie the book together to making that much more interesting. Night is a key to most of the main parts of the story, because at night they went to the graveyard, Jackson? s Island, treasure hunting, and crazy things like that. Thunderstorms are also mentioned several times in the story. On Jackson? s Island, they experienced true nature with the loud scary thunder.

After the incident with Injun Joe at the tavern, they also experienced thunder. Twain is great with how he handles his structure, while still leave that question in your head. ? Readers have pointed to several parallels among the plot lines. For one thing, they all involve deaths, real or imagined. For another, they all end somewhat predictably. Finally, all four stories have the same hero, Tom Sawyer, the orphan who raised himself near rags to near riches on the strength of his courage and imagination. ?
