Macbeth's character is portrayed from the beginning with bravery, courage, and valor. Only later does the reader discover that he is plagued with wicked ambition and curiosity. His weak will allow him to easily be overwhelmed by his wifes influence. Despite his good-natured personality, his ambitions to become something greater prevail and lead him to do his evil deeds.

After returning from a triumphant battle, Macbeth's body flows with courage and bravery until he comes into contact with the three witches. Upon this encounter, the witches foretell of three prophecies that will hold true for Macbeth. He first dismisses them with denial, and questions why he should partake in such divination's. However, his weak nature allows him to fall prey to his wifes strong influence. She persuades him to act upon the prophecies that the witches had spoken of.

Both his wife and his ambitions to become something better compel him to murder the king while he rests. The next morning the cunning and sly which reside deep within Macbeth's conscience begin to stir about as he formulates a conjecture for the kings death. However, knowing the real truth behind the Duncan's death is enough to create a sort of moral torture within his mind, one that doesnt dissipate with time. This torture is something that remains with him throughout the play, but he does realize what needs to be done in order to secure his innocence and remove all doubt of his role in murder from his fellow noblemen. Seeking his own survival, he loses all discernment between good and evil and hires assassins to murder Banquo, a once trusted friend but now a potential enemy. After hearing of the successful murder of Banquo, Macbeth begins to hallucinate and visualize Banquo's ghost.

This is merely another form of the moral torture that Macbeth is experiencing deep within his conscience. It is something that tries to keep him in touch with reality, but constantly fails as he becomes determined to carry on, despite what he may encounter along the way. However, even after the external and internal forces of evil have done their worst, Macbeth remains essentially human and his conscience continues to witness the diminution of his being. At the end, in spite of shattered nerves and extreme distraction of mind, the individual passes out still adhering admirably to his code of personal courage, and the mans conscience still clearly admonishes that he has done evil. Macbeth is truly a tragic hero, one that had he followed his own thoughts and morals could have led to great things, but he was corrupted by the influence and superstitions that were imposed upon him by the three witches and Lady Macbeth. Sought to seek out the their will, Macbeth is merely a puppet of the witches in which his morals and ethics shatter underneath the ambitions of power and greatness.
