The universe is like a magic trick because of the questions and beliefs that arise when something is shown to people that doesnt coincide with their beliefs about reality and what can and cant possibly happen. It causes many different reactions. The universe, its vastness, how it was created, and why we are a part of it amazes and astounds many people who are constantly searching for answers. Others believe they have the answers and try to persuade people to understand their view.
Others dont even think about it at all. When witnessing the tricks of magicians, most people say, Wow, that was amazing. The thought, question or statement that comes next is what I perceive makes the universe like a magic trick. Those words could be, He must have magical powers, or I know it was a trick, it was fun to watch and now I am going to go do something else, or I know it was a trick, I want to figure out how it was done, or He cant fool me though, I know how he did it, listen and Ill tell you how. People who immediately assume that the magician really has magical powers merely by trusting what they saw are the people I would coin as unexposed to commonly know reality.
A good example is young children. When attending a magic show, they may know that they can not do what they just saw, but will believe that the person performing for them can somehow. They may not question how they were tricked at all. Their connection to reality will be made when someone tells them that it was a trick. Then the child will ask how it was done.
They will either be satisfied with the answer they receive or not. They will have a change in character at this point. Those who know and accept they where tricked, are happy that they have been entertained, and go about their business without wondering how, are the people I would classify as doers. I think that the majority of people in the world are doers.
These are people who go along doing this and that without ever trying to seek solutions to lifes unanswered questions. These type of people are happy knowing what they know. They are open to learning new things as they are brought to their attention through daily routines. These new things are always concrete and have definitive answers. They may ponder philosophical questions once in a while, but they dont expand their thoughts. The people who know they have been tricked and want to figure out how, are those I would relate closely to scientific thinkers.
These are people whose nagging question in life is how. How, how, how? They know there is an answer. They will go and see the magician again and again, observing his act from another perspective each time. These people are always curious, and live to find definitive answers. They believe there is an explainable reason for everything.
In Sophie's World, Alberto says that it may be better to compare the Universe to the white rabbit being pulled from the magicians top hat. Some people live cuddled up on the rabbits fur, happy and content. Others, namely philosophers, crawl to the ends of the rabbits fur to look into the magicians eyes. I think that philosophic minded people would react to the magicians trick the same as a scientific mind.
They both venture out on the end of the rabbits fur, one believes there are definitive answers, while one believes they will always be looking. Those who believe they know how the magic trick was performed and want to explain to others, I classify as extreme believers. They may have seen Magics Secrets Reveled, or read a book on magic tricks, or even be able to perform the trick themselves. These type of people do not know however, that how the learned that the trick was done, or how they do the trick is the same way in which the magician did the trick. They show others and in turn others become like them. These others will now believe that they know.
They may be right. They may be wrong as well. The Universe is like a magic trick in so far as the type of questions it can present and the reflection that people bestow upon those questions. If one could go inside of a persons thought when they have just seen a magic show, and then compare them to their reactions when the question of the Universe is brought upon them, one would probably see the same kind of activity.
