The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel I have read many times and will probably read again many more times. It is my favorite novel. Although this book takes place in the Jazz Age it could easily be taking place today. The Great Gatsby along with its themes are timeless. Money and morals and whether you have them or don?

t are dominating themes in this novel. Daisy and Tom Buchanan live a life of extreme decadence. They have a beautiful mansion, high status in society, and all things that are glossy on the outside. However they lack love, commitment, honesty, and happiness in their marriage. They are also lacking, along with many of the characters in the novel, morals. They live artificial lives that are very appealing from the outside looking in.

Nick Carraway, the voice of reason in the novel, even gets pulled into and almost lost in this surreal world of money and lavish parties. Jay Gatsby is struggling and longing to fit into this world of where if you have money anything seems attainable. Gatsby has stopped at nothing to achieve status and attain money to win back Daisy. He believes that he can win Daisy back through these artificial means because she rejected him due to the fact that he did not have these things. Instead Daisy chooses Tom whom she does not love because he has money and status. Although Gatsby does attain what he was working so hard at he never truly fits in or wins Daisy back.

In the end Gatsby dies alone and virtually friendless. He has all and nothing at the same time. Nick Carraway is the only character who escapes this corrupt artificial society doomed to its ultimate destiny. When Gatsby dies Nick is awakened and reaches his epiphany. He realizes that this wonderful world of money and status means in the end nothing. Nick goes back home and leaves these people behind.

It almost seems that Fitzgerald knew what was coming and what was to happen to this generation. Which is the crash and then depression in the thirties. Nick escapes this by the thread of a hair. This timeless novel sheds light onto the fact that material possessions and money are not everything. It shows the reader that all the characters in the novel are living the American dream but they are living lonely lives. The characters are on a downward spiral that is leading them into their inevitable fate, the thirties crash and depression.
