The book Gulliver's Travels was written by Jonathan Swift. It takes place in different, unusual places. Gulliver goes on four important voyages, the first to the city of Lilliput, the second to Brobdingnag, the third voyage to Laputa, and the last voyage to the country of Houyhnhnms. On Gulliver's first voyage, he did not mean to go to Lilliput, but Gulliver's ship wrecked on rocks and he had to swim to land. When he found land, he was so tired that he could not move and the people captured him.
Even though they were only six inches tall, they were able to capture Gulliver. They loaded him onto a wooden platform with wheels and brought him into the city. In the city they chained him up with twenty-four locks. While he was chained up, he made friends with the people of Lilliput and soon they took the chains off his legs but did not let him go. If he tried to escape, they shot poison arrows at him.
Gulliver helped the people of Lilliput win a battle against their enemies by taking all of the enemy's ships' anchors and leading them into the open sea. The people of Lilliput finally let Gulliver go. He took some little cows and horses with him to England for proof of what really happened. Gulliver's second voyage to Brobdingnag was meant to be a search for new land in the south, but a storm blew him off course and he was blown into a land which he thought was the east. When he arrived there, he went to the land in a rowboat. When he got to the land, he was captured by natives that were twenty times the size of him and they took him to their queen.
The queen gave him to her daughter who took care of him and showed him to the city. He was soon a popular attraction and everyone wanted to hold him, but the queen's daughter would not let them. Eventually after two years, the queen put Gulliver in a box and an eagle took him to the ocean to let him float. Sailors found him and took him back to England. Gulliver's third trip was to Laputa. He was sailing and pirates captured his ship and he was forced to go to an island.
When he arrived, he noticed that there was a city floating in the air. He communicated to the people and they helped him into the floating city. The people of Laputa looked weird. They had on odd colored clothing that had designs of instruments on them.
Their heads were either tilted to the left or right, and their eyes were facing in different directions. The city was held by a huge magnet. The king could raise or lower the city whenever he wanted to. Once Gulliver had been there a while, he asked the king if he could build a ship and leave in it. The king allowed him to go.
Gulliver left to go back to his home in England. Gulliver decided to go on another trip, to Houyhnhnm. On the way there, the captain turned on the crew, and Gulliver was forced to go to the island by himself in a row boat. When he had been there for a few days, he noticed that horses could talk. The horses looked normal except that they had no tail. They were called Yahoos.
Gulliver tried to convince them that he was a Yahoo, too. He said his finger nails were not as long as theirs, and that he could walk on his hind legs. He soon got bored and built a little boat and started to sail, and a big ship picked him up and sailed all the way to England. Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift is about a man who went on four voyages: the first to Lilliput, land of the small people; the second to Brobdingnag, land of the giants; the third to Laputa, the floating city; and the last to the country of Houyhnhnm, land of horses.
