Preparation of a Mini- Research Paper in the International Economic Area The mini-research project will provide you the opportunity to engage in a limited investigation of either the theoretical literature, or the historical, or contemporary policy literature pertaining to the international economic area. Your selection and delimitation of a topic to investigate might be approached by a general review of the course texts which would provide you with the wide range of specific topics available; you might scan general references and / or other international texts available in the library; you could become familiar with one or more of the following publications and become aware of the extensive literature available: A. E. , Journal of Economic Literature Social Sciences and Humanities Index Business International Publications Careful attention should be given to looking only for the literature dealing with your particular topic. The literature in the field is so vast that you will find yourself lost if you do not narrow your research to one single topic.
The research report will contain four sections: Introduction, the five Abstracts, Summary, and Conclusions. A. Introduction: The introduction will specify the problem (or topic) investigated. It should orient the reader to the inquiry undertaken, framed the inquiry in its problems or issues context, and focus on specific questions to be answered by the research. B.
Abstract: Each abstract (one for each of the five articles used) should not be more than one single-spaced typed page in length and should follow this format generally: Bibliographic Data (Sample- D. The concept is rather simple in that it states that if a country uses fewer resources than another country in producing a particular good, that country should then specialize in the production of that good. According to Smiths reasoning, countries engage in trade with one another because each of the countries have absolute advantage in certain goods. Smith is known as the father of Classical Economics and the writings of Smith and his followers in the area of International Economics is called Classical Trade Theory. If a date had to be given to this period of classical trade theory, the beginning date would be 1776 and the ending date would probably be in the early years of the 1870 s. This classical period in economics was followed by what is called the neoclassical period which according to many economists continues to the present but this is controversial, for some say it ended in the 1930 s with J. M.
Keynes while others would say that it ended in the 1980 s with the introduction of modern trade theory. A course in international economics always begins with classical trade theory for it introduces the student to Smiths absolute advantage.
