The House on Mango Street Essay (# 1) In Sandra Cisneros s The House on Mango Street a tragic yet somewhat common situation was represented. Mrs. Rose Vargas was the single mother of many exceedingly energetic children. Without the aid of her husband who left her, she tries to take care of her children who are described as too many and too much as she is one against so many. Due to Mrs. Vargas s inability to care for her children, the risk they pose to themselves and others, and the future repercussions of the situation, the children should be sent to a foster home.

As the alliterated lines of this chapter explain, Mrs. Vargas is very tired from trying to provide for so many children with what most likely is a low level of education. Because she is a single parent who is probably paid close to minimum wage, she must work many hours just to feed and clothe her large family. Work alone must consume almost all of her time in the day. Such a large number of children, many of which are still infants, really require a parent who can stay home and care for them all day. Because Mrs.

Vargas can not finance her own family and care for them in her current situation, her children are not at all guided or supervised. Mrs. Vargas s children are described as without respect for all things living, including themselves. Because they have not been guided at all by their fully occupied mother, they do very foolish things. The children play chicken on roof tops, bounce between cars, and jump off of buildings. This behavior and disrespect could easily be eliminated with some guidance.

The children did not receive any support from others for as the narrator stated you got tired of being worried about kids who aren t even yours. This behavior does not come without consequences. These children caused physical damage to themselves when one child broke his tooth on a parking meter, and wouldn t help his sister get her head un-lodged from a gate. The worst consequence to this behavior was the death of one child named Angel who tried to fly off of a roof. As the children grow this problem surely will not subside. When a child is young they need guidance in life.

As they grow many of these children will surely end up in prison, or deceased. Without discipline they obviously are not receiving an adequate education, and will not be able to find a stable occupation when they grow older. With this lack of morals, it is highly likely they will resort to crime. If they are given those responsibilities that come with age, these children will abuse them. In a later chapter of this book entitled The Monkey Garden, a beautiful garden grew unsightly and out of hand through a lack of care. The Vargas children are similar to this garden in that they too can grow out of hand without proper direction.

A foster home is the only solution to this situation. Expecting the mother to provide proper direction is irrational, as is expecting her neighbors to. In this situation ignorance and poverty do not justify the neglect of the children. Regardless of income, any parent is capable of teaching their children to respect living things at an early age. Although it is hard to give up her children, this would be much better for them.

A foster home may guide them in the correct direction in life so that they can support their own families and live happy lives. This in the long run would make them what their hard working mother would want them to be.
