Heart of Darkness And Nervous Conditions Essay Live on 97. 8 FM Literature Hour Gaby: Welcome and Good Morning! ! ! Today we are live with two very important main characters of two great books, Heart of Darkness and Nervous Conditions. Let them introduce themselves. Tambu: Hello, I m Tambu from Nervous Conditions and I am the main character. Marlow: Hello, I m from Heart of Darkness and my name is Marlow. Gaby: To day they are both here to tell us what issue they had in their society and how it affected their society in the book, racism.

They are also here to share their wisdom on how women played a role in their society. Well, we ll start off with Tambu, how did racism come to be in Nervous Conditions? Tambu: Racism was brought to our society by colonization but basically the Europeans brought that issue to our society. Gaby: So how was Racism a central issue, which affected you and your society throughout the book?

Tambu: Well, it all began with the upper class. They maintained much of the control over everything especially, power and money. This didn t leave my society and I much left, besides harsh living and poverty. Gaby: Did this over powering cause a great affect upon you society, and if it did, how?

Tambu: Yes, of course we as a society were affected by this and greatly. First of all we were in great poverty and as a society of African Americans we had a terrible reputation. The poverty caused our society to have harsh housing; we couldn t afford schooling or we didn t receive one at all. Much of our land was taken away, to many, we weren t equal or even disserve anything at all and we had no benefits. The poverty we had was a great chain, no benefits, no land; no land, no money; no money, no home; no home, no food; no food, no school; no school, no equalities and because there wasn t no equality there was Racism. Gaby: How did you feel and what did you, as a person of your society, do to overcome this great obstacle of yours?

Tambu; I wanted to show that as a poor girl, I could do it so I went to school, to show I could do and prove it. My father didn t support the idea of schooling, but I did it for myself to prove to myself that I can achieve my goals in life. Gaby: That s Great! ! ! I bet it was difficult? Tambu: Of Course! ! Gaby: I bet it was! !

So Marlow, how were you confronted with racism? Marlow: I as a person wasn t affected by racism, but I did see brought upon others. Gaby: It was an indirect effect? Marlow: Yes, it was brought by many of the white men. These men used many of the African Savages from the Congo as their crews on their boats or steamboats. Gaby: So how the Africans affected?

Marlow: Most of the Africans had nothing and the awful salary, which was paid by the white men. The Africans also did anything and everything to work, while the white managers watch them do all the work. The Africans were mainly taken advantage of and they worked like animals. Gaby: It does sound like they were treated like animals. Well another central issue throughout both books was the role that women played. Tambu lets start with you, what was the role of women in your society?

Tambu: The women in our society were very hard workers and they were taken advantage off. Many men were very sexists. They believed that women only belonged in the village making dinner, taking care of the children and only working in the harsh fields. While the men waited for their dinner, the women slaved away in the kitchen making everything perfect just for the men. Women were mainly the men s puppets. Gaby: Did you see any affect with this treatment?

Tambu: Yes, women would move up in our society. For instance, in my cause my father and brother disapproved of me attending school and receiving an education. They believed that I was made to work in the farms. So the only way I was going to succeed was to try to get money on my own and try to hide it from them. I did receive enough money, but from a stranger. When my father found out, he wanted to interrupt and take all the money that they women afford me for my education.

Gaby: How did you feel? Tambu: I felt like pooh. My own family didn t want to support me all they did was reject my ideas of my goal, because they were to sexist. Gaby: Marlow, how did women play a role in your society?

Marlow: Well, women also didn t have a good reputation in society. Women were also known as household workers and they always did everything for men. Gaby: So your society and Tambu s society expected women to be the same. Marlow: Yes, men never wanted to stoop a low as women or ask them for some sort if favor. Gaby: Why? Marlow: Well as a man you never want to ask women for help, because if you did it would seem very non masculine.

Maybe we feel this way cause we re embarrassed, its just they way men are. In Heart of Darkness we really didn t have any women characters except my aunt and she didn t have a big part at all. Many men through this time were just really sexist. They didn t give women any chances to prove themselves. Gaby: Well I ll like to conclude my hour by thanking my two great guests in describing their connections in their books, Heart of Darkness and Nervous Conditions. I believe that many of the same issues can be experienced in the same way but in different instances, like two different but also very similar books.

Thank you for coming and sharing your experiences with us. Marlow: I was delighted! ! Tambu: So was I! ! ! Marlow, Tambu and Gaby: Thank You and Goodnight
