Renaissance Art by: June McDonald Renaissance Art took place mainly between the 1400 s and the 1600 s. It began in Italy during the 14 th century and reached its height in the 15 th century. During the 16 th and 17 th centuries it spread into the rest of europe. The renaissance was called the beginning of the modern age.
The most obvious changes during this period are seen in the paintings and sculptures. Artists began to experiment for the first time with oil-based paints. They used bronze to make the scenes in their bas reliefs more lifelike. Perspective and light were introduced into art. A team of computer experts recently proved that background architectural details were perfectly proportioned and positioned in relations to the figures in the foreground of some Renaissance paintings.
Many Renaissance works of art showed subjects taken from the bible. Nonreligious subject from Greek and Roman Mythology were also popular. The painters and artist that lived during renaissance changed the way the world looked at art for all time. Jan Van Eyck was one of the many artist in this period. Some of his works were Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfin and Jean Ceramic, and Ghent Altarpiece. Another famous artist was Simone Martini.
Some of his art was the Annunciation. Another artist was Botticelli. He made the Birth of Venus. Primavera da Vinci made Adoration of the Magi and Annunciation, and Michelangelo made the Too Family (his first Renaissance painting).
