For centuries people have told stories about men who transform into wolves on full moons or at nighttime. Nobody knows if these mystical creatures really exist or if they are just myths. There is evidence in the story Gabriel-Ernest that werewolves do exist. Based upon these facts there is reason to believe that Gabriel-Ernest is in fact a werewolf. One clue that leads to this conclusion is that Gabriel-Ernest himself said that he lived in the woods and ate flesh.

Also, the animal population around the area where he lived was diminishing without any explanation. The most convincing evidence to support the idea that Gabriel-Ernest is a werewolf is that the artist Cunningham said that he saw, with his own eyes, Gabriel-Ernest standing on the hillside and as soon as the sun dipped out of view the boy vanished and there in his place stood a large wolf. When Gabriel-Ernest was first introduced in the story ha was depicted as being a savage young boy. The author said that he lay a sprawl in the sun drying his wet brown limbs.

He also said that his eyes were light brown and had a tigerish gleam to them. All these physical traits that he possesses are wolf like features that could make some people believe that he is indeed a werewolf. Van Cheele asked Gabriel-Ernest what he ate and his reply was flesh. What do you feed on? he asked. Flesh, said the boy, and pronounced the word with a slow relish as though he were tasting it.

page 68 - 69 If Gabriel-Ernest were a normal boy he probably would not have given Van Cheele this very disturbing answer. Van Cheele now knows that Gabriel-Ernest is not a normal boy because of his answer, the fact that he hunts on his own (without a dog) and lives in the woods. The animal population around the area where Gabriel-Ernest lived was diminishing without any explanation. Animals were being taken from farms and even lambs were going missing Something had been thinning the game in the woods lately, poultry had been missing from the farms, hares were growing unaccountably scarcer, and complaints had reached him of lambs being carried off bodily from the hills. page 69 A wolf could very easily have caused those strange occurrences that were happening in the woods.

Gabriel-Ernest even said himself that he fed on rabbits, wild-fowl, hares, poultry, and lambs in their season. This proves without a doubt that Gabriel-Ernest is responsible for the disappearance of these animals in the woods. Probably the most convincing evidence that Gabriel-Ernest is a werewolf is what Cunningham said he saw while observing the sunset. Cunningham said that when the sun dipped down out of view the boy on the hillside in front of him vanished and there, in his place, stood a large wolf. the boy vanished too!

What! Vanished away into nothing? asked Van Cheele excitedly. No, that s the dreadful part of it, answered the artist; on the open hillside where the boy had been standing a second ago, stood a large wolf page 71 Cunningham was not sure that what he saw really happened because his mother died of some brain trouble and he thought that his brain might be defective like his mothers. However this is not the case because Cunningham has not showed any sign s of brain trouble in the past. Gabriel-Ernest is a werewolf.

Firstly, Gabriel-Ernest said to Van Cheele that he ate flesh and lived in the woods. The animal population around the area where Gabriel-Ernest lives was diminishing without any explanation. Lastly, Cunningham said that he saw, with his own eyes, Gabriel-Ernest turn into a large wolf. It is fairly obvious that the author intended for us to believe that Gabriel-Ernest is a werewolf. Van Cheele knows by the end of the story that he is a werewolf and the only thing he can do is try to kill him or inform others about the beast living in his woods.
