Ernest Hemingway was born before the turn of the century on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. His family raised him with their middle-class expectations and morals. During Hemingway s childhood he was dressed to be a twin of his sister Marcelline. He graduated in 1917 from Oak Park High School. He was very active in both sports and writing. He used his literary skills to earn him a job as a reporter for the Kansas City Star.

In July of 1918, Hemingway went to Italy to be an ambulance driver for the Red Cross. Not long after joining his unit he was hurt in the line of duty and was cared for at an Italian hospital where he had over a dozen operations on his knee. While in the hospital he fell in love with a nurse. After many months of recovery, Hemingway spent four years as a reporter for the Toronto Star. In September 1921, Ernest married Hadley Richardson, the first of his four wives.

The young couple settled in Paris and raised John, the first of his three sons. He began to write novels that brought him to fame. Some of his writing samples include The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell To Arms, For Whom the Bells Toll, The Old Man and The Sea. In 1954, Ernest Hemingway won the Noble Peace Prize.

In 1961, after previous attempts of suicide, Ernest Hemingway shot himself and left a legacy. (Anderson 553, Berman) One of Hemingway s greatest works is In Another Country. This short story was set during world war one in Italy. The narrator of the story is a soldier, who enlisted to fight for the Italian army as Hemingway had. Another character in the story, the Major, is a professional soldier. Before the war, he was a champion fencer trying to recover from his shrunken fencing hand by receiving mechanical therapy. Out of duty the Major returns to the hospital to be treated by the therapeutic machines, even though he has no trust in there effectiveness.

When tyro (the first-person narrator) is introduced he speaks Italian grammatically. One afternoon the Major goes to the hospital in a very irritable mood and provokes the tyro into a rude argument over marriage. He insists that he must never marry. If he is to lose everything, he should not place himself in a position to lose that. He should not place himself in a position to lose. He should find things he cannot lose.

After this comment he made a telephone call and returns to the room. He apologizes for being rude but says his wife just died and he began to cry. He started to look at nothing and left the room in a soldierly fashion. The doctors placed photographs of the Major s wounds but this did not matter to him because he only looked out the window.

The Major s professional attitude is marveled because he only considers the significant and for the rest he ignores. The Major s story is neither the accumulation of a code of life. Since he is human, he has produced the feelings of love. His commitment to love and the shock of his wives death has put the major in another country then the one he is ready to defend.

The other country is just a human condition, because the will of a human is always vulnerable to vast destruction. Hemingway s ultimate test of human performance is the degree of stripped courage and dignity which man can discover in himself in the moments of despair. The major not only is losing his wife, but is losing himself followed by the wrongs of his continued life. Even though he is badly broken, he has not yet been destroyed. The Major will not resign to un-meaning, but he will not accept the fact that he has been beat. The major survives with much dignity and can probably be portrayed as Hemingway s ideal portrait of heroism.

The characteristic of dignity is so important to Hemingway that he must make it a main topic in his writing. (Rovit 61 - 64) Anderson, Robert. Ernest Hemingway. Elements of Literature. New York: Holt, Rhinehart and Winston, 1993. Berman, Alan. Suicide.
