Edward Taylor is considered to be one of the best verse writers in colonial times. Born and raised in England, he went through many of the countries hectic changes. Records of Edward Taylor s birth have not been found; the Taylor families church records are incomplete because the Civil War between the Puritans and Cavaliers has destroyed to teach. He was educated under a nonconformist schoolmaster and was planning to earn a living as a teacher. As a schoolboy he studies the poetry by George Herbert, which would have a great impact on Taylor.
Although he began his career as a teacher in Bagworth, England, he was not able to continue due to the fall of the Cromwell regime. Being a highly religious person, he was not able to sign the Act of Uniformity of 1662 because it was against his religious convictions. Evicted as a schoolmaster, unable to preach and attend the Cambridge or Oxford Universities because of this act, he had no choice but to leave the country and embark for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Edward Taylor s age and previous education allowed him to achieve an advanced standing at Harvard College. Graduating in three years, in 1671, he was made a scholar of the house.
Despite this honor he left to be a minister in a small town called Westfield, one hundred miles from Boston. Arriving in the early December of 1671, he was to remain there for fifty-farmer, and leading citizen in the New England colony. He has church records that show that he was constantly brawling and drinking. He went through stressful times when Philip s war devastated the colony.
He died a painful and agonizing death on June 24, 1729 due to old age. In 1939 The Poetical Works of Edward Taylor, were published by Yale University despite Taylor s instructions to his family, which told them not to have his works published. His more significant collections are considered to be Preparatory Meditations and Gods Determinations Touching His Elect. The collection of more than 200 poems discusses several religious themes. It puts into view Taylors perception of blessed theantropy. Gods Determinations is a poem that celebrates Gods power in triumph of good over evil in the human soul.
Central to all his poems is the typical Metaphysical mode, meaning the extravagant figure of speech and the association of image and idea intended by its tension to strike poetic sparks.
