Mirror, mirror on the wall, who s the fattest one of all? If you can relate to the above saying, you are not alone. Thousands of women and an increasing amount of men look in the mirror everyday and hate what they see. Here s where the problem begins. Research shows that society adores the thin and deplores the fat, so why do you think people get eating disorders? Because being thin is society s way of saying you fit in.

Most people consider the lean body envious and push slimness to a point of obsession. We see the slim with characteristics of beauty, femininity and masculinity, health, sexuality, and wealth, but this is outlining everyone- age and race. With teens it is different. Social pressure, popularity, boyfriends / girlfriends are the main issues for wanting to be skinny. For some students, the high school experience is miserable and unbearable because they are not this way. A fat girl was kicked off a cheerleading squad for not being the right size and a high school drill team excluded fat people, but not skinny people from the team.

These are both two good facts to why teens would want to lose weight in the first place. If you want to have a half-decent looking boy friend / girl friend, then you must be skinny. Not true, but this is what we all love to think. It is rough for teens to have to grow in a society where the skinny ones rule our lives. What about dating Dave, the most popular guy in the school? Does anyone think that an overweight girl would have a chance?

Why don t you ask Dave, or anyone of his friends, maybe even people who don t really know him? It is obvious what the answer would be unless there was a miracle. Why do teens have to live through this is a good question, but it all comes down to the people around you. Betting from high school experience put downs and teasing go on whether or not it is strictly prohibited. And as much as the people think it is not going to make a difference in the other person s life, it does. Why would someone want to lose weight when they are fat, if they are still going to be teased about other things as well?

This could lead to obsessive overeating. The person could become obese because they could not handle the mental abuse. This would lead to more eating, and so on. Other times teasing could lead to Anorexia or Bulimia, where the person will not eat anymore or will eat a lot and throw it all up because of the fear of becoming too fat or not being the right size. People s comments are mostly what trigger the whole disease.

Even jokes about being fat, even if you are not could make you think that you are fat. A young girl went home everyday crying about the older boys in her school that were teasing her about her weight and calling her butterball. This not only made her life difficult, but also turned her away from meeting new people because of her fear of being laughed at, mocked and teased. For the next year she hid herself away in school, never ate in the cafeteria and put her head down when she walked through the halls. She gained weight at this time after and could never forgive herself for doing that. Now the boys are the last people on her mind, as she has forgotten the time, but can never forgive them for the damage the brought to her life.

People do not understand the effect they have each other. You may not know the person you are teasing, but you are in their lives forever Society is now starting to do its job in advertising more heavier teens in magazines and shows, but what we are seeing does not help. Taken from a teen magazine, the article has to do with heavier girls going to the prom, and the article is titled... This unfortunately points out the heavier girls as being heavy, and that is what they do not want.

No young girl wants to be recognized as the heavier type, especially in a teen magazine where everyone can see just how big you are. These magazines should yes, focus on heavier girls, but not center them out like they do. The editors should just add them in the magazine without them being noticed as big. One who is heavier and reads the magazine would be thinking, Wow, it s great that they are stating to add more girls like this, but why center them out?

The girls who are a size 12 and do not think they are fat or overweight may read the magazine and see girls who are portrayed as the heavier type that are also a size 12 - 13 and think, Well, I must be fat then. People do not need someone to tell them that they are fat, it is not healthy for their self-esteem. Any little thing can hurt someone if it is focused on his or her weight. Society applauds the thin, but dictates where the rest of us fit in. Peers, magazines, and popularity twist our minds to think that we should look one way, which is thin, or are centered out because we are overweight.

The understanding that society gives us that it is this way or no way. No one wants to live by this method any longer; it is just not modern. And for all those who recite the Mirror, mirror speech in front of the mirror each day, you can just say that it shouldn t be worth the trouble because you don t need someone else telling you what to look like. Don t live by what everyone else wants you to be. Instead, recite Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest on of all? Believe it or not, this is not a fairy tale.
