In the poem Dulce et Decorum Est, by Eilfred Owen, the story of soldiers marching to a place for rest and sleep is told. This poem contains a lot of metaphors. It also contains an example of connotation and denotation. There are also some very vivid images. This poem also contains a paradox and an oxymoron.
A metaphor is the comparison of two unlike things. The first metaphor can be found in the first line, Bent double, like old beggars under sacks. Beggars on the street that hise under sacks are usually curled up and are bent or crooked. This metaphor is comparing the soldier to the beggars and states that the soldiers are two times as crooked and bent as the beggars because they are so tired. The next metaphor is in line two, coughing like hags.
The soldiers are very tired and they sound as horrible as hags or witches. Another metaphor is Drunk with fatigue. This metaphor can be found in line 7 and is saying that the soldiers are so tired they can hardly walk straight. In line 12 the metaphor floundering like a man in fire or lime appears. This metaphor is comparing the way that the man without a gas mask runs around to the way a person on fire or being burnt by lime would run around. There are also some other metaphors in this poem like His hanging face, like a devils sick of sin (line 20) and bitter as the cud/ Of vile (lines 23 - 24).
