Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino star in the 1997 thriller, Devils Advocate. Keanu Reeves plays the role of a man name Kevin Lomax, who is a no-name lawyer from Gainesville, Florida. He is lured to New York City by a large law firm who has heard about Kevin's success as a lawyer in the state of Florida. Kevin and his beautiful wife Mary Anne, played by Charlize Theron, quickly move to Manhattan, lured by luxuries such as a gorgeous apartment and other paid expenses.
While I enjoyed the film immensely, I felt that its bizarreness was a little bit much. Typically I am interested in films which deal with attorney and / or the law. I feel that the parts of Kevin and Milton are played superbly by Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. I especially enjoyed the section of the movie when Kevin discovers that Milton is his long-lost father. This adds a great deal of drama to the situation, something that is necessary in a film such as Devils Advocate. One of the observations I made about the film was that Kevin's legal talents are the Devils instruments of choice.
It is his legal practices that destroy his wife and eventually lead to her horrifying death. An important quote which I recall was when Milton (Al Pacino) says, nobody on earth could do his bidding better than a well trained band of attorneys. Kevin is working for Milton, and the more pampered he becomes, so much the better for Milton. It wasnt until this point when I finally realized the true meaning behind the film. The movie ends with the quote by Milton, Vanity is definitely my favorite sin.
He is talking about Kevin's vanity. Milton is telling Kevin that his clean cut, powerful lawyer look, is responsible for his wifes death. While Mary Anne was miserable in New York, Kevin refused to go back to Florida and loose his position in the firm. I agree that Kevin's vanity is responsible for his wifes death, and I feel that the ending was completely appropriate.
