Jacks Hopewell: Jacks was about 17 years old, and was really arrogant. He believed that he was better than anyone in his classes at school. He had short brown hair and green eyes. He was really tall and muscular. Sandra Jackson: Sandra was 16 years old. She was very demure and intelligent.

She was quiet and hardly ever spoke to her peers. She had very low self-esteem. Judith Couly: Judith was a counselor at James Hart High School. She was often there to help Jacks and Sandra.

She was short and kind of chubby. Everyone loved her to death because of her outstanding personality. Jaime Dickson: Jaime was Sandra's best friend. She was very outgoing, confident and popular.

She had been friends for about seven years with Sandra and still was even though they were extreme opposites. The story took place mainly in the hallways at James Hart High School. Through the story that took place there Sandra and Jacks took their experiences back home with them. The time period when this story takes place is in modern day school, but Im sure that it could extend to the past and even the future. Its really important that I knew the setting of the story because it sets the mood of confusion, fear, and empowerment. These are all the things that Sandra and Jacks dealt with every day with the help of their counselor.

When Jacks and Sandra entered into their sophomore and junior years in high school they did not know each other. Eventually though they became to know what it was like to be the other person. Through these experiences they even became friends. On the first day of school Jacks went and was associating with all of the guys from the football team or other popular figures in the school. Of course their chatting was not without criticism. They decided to pick on every new kid in the school and give them wedges.

Their cruelty was indifferent. Jacks seemed so proud that he would make the kids or others praise his great body and looks. Meanwhile, as Sandra entered her first day she was very meek and reluctant to make a sound in the hallway in fear that someone would point her out. She met up with Jaime and they talked about their schedules. Jaime was telling Sandra that she should try out for some plays, cheerleading, sports, clubs, or anything that would keep her from locking herself in her bedroom after school. Sandra was not going for the encouragement, instead after school she went home and went in her room and thought about how much fun the other kids at school must be having.

She was so scared that someone would pick on her, because she had seen it done to people her whole life. She wasnt emotionally strong enough to brush cruel comments away. These bouts with fear and doubt continued to run through Sandra's mind the entire year until one day when she received a pass to the guidance counselor. Unknowingly Jacks had received a pass too.

When they met in the guidance office Ms. Couly asked them both to be seated. She began to explain that some friends of theirs were concerned about them for two totally different reasons. She told Sandra it was her low self-esteem and Jacks that it was his ego.

She thought that they should begin to walk everywhere through the halls together and see the kind of reactions they would get. The point was to make Sandra feel like she was worth something, and Jacks feel like being popular isnt everything. They both agreed to do it. In the weeks that followed Ms. Couly called Jacks and Sandra down to the office periodically to see if everything was okay. She was discovering that Jacks was making Sandra feel good about herself and Sandra was letting Jack see the unpopular side of life.

Ms. Couly decided that when the school year was finished that both Sandra and Jacks should give a speech about what had happened to the entire school. Sandra and Jacks were seen together all over the place and both of them actually were having a good time being with each other. It seemed like their personalities were clicking and it was great for the both of them. Jacks and Sandra both were improving their attitudes. By the end of the year they had become best friends and they even hung out outside of school.

Ms. Couly called them down to her office one day and asked them to do the speech and they both thought it would be fun. So that evening Jacks went to Sandra's house so that they could help each other write. Well that was a night to remember, because Julie and Jacks ended up kissing and then he asked her to be his girlfriend. She said yes of course, and they were both excited about the whole thing.

After they finished writing the speeches they started to practice in front of each other and it turned out to be a success. The following week they both delivered their speeches in the school auditorium and everyone was shocked to hear the news that they were together as a couple. Ms. Couly was so happy that her plan to help the two of them actually turned out to have a happy ending. She decided that she would start a program to help more kids like Sandra and Jacks. My opinion of the book is that I can relate to the way Sandra felt insecure, but also the way that Jacks had pride in himself.

It was a good book because of the fact that it is really applicable to school nowadays. I think that Julie and Jacks getting together was a real twist for the story and it was great. I think that the book made a real contrast between the lives of two people, but still held them together which was probably a difficult thing to do. Bibliography:
