There is a man whose name I didnt know but whose words Ill never forget. A nameless face among a crowd of nameless faces, distinct only by his words of inspiring wisdom. It was a Sunday morning, the Lords morning. A gathering of faithful Catholics filled the church with the same solemn obligation like to many Sundays before. That day we were told that the priest was away, therefore volunteer speakers would be responsible for the days mass.

It was a pretty ordinary thing so I knew what to expect. A few people discussed a particular passage of the bible they felt carried significance in their lives. Some brought forth stories they believed strengthened their faith in the Bible and reassured their belief in God. After twenty minutes or so the coordinator asked for any last volunteers for the day.

Being only ten years old I prayed that no one would volunteer. I was steadily becoming uneasy, and could hardly remain seated. Yet to my disappointment one last hand arose from the crowd. A man I had never seen in church before, and so far, gone all day without noticing, stood from his seat and made his way to the alter.

Now maybe it was bad lighting, or just childish imagination, but to this day I would almost swear the light itself feared his face. Every beautiful flicker of the candle that so dared the revealed the color of his eyes or the features or his face, seemed to shrivel and fall to his heals. Not to say he was a frightening man, but more like a familiar one. Like a man youve seen a thousand times but only just looked at. Through the shadows he appeared no more than thirty or thirty-five, yet carried with him the look of a man whod seen many hard days. Why are you here?

he asked after reaching the podium. His voice was strong but fluid. So strong in fact, it was as if he was talking to me directly. Why are you here... the question of questions!

It holds a thousand meaning and a thousand answers. But what Im asking is not why do you exist are what is your propose for living, I just want to know why you are in this room, in this church, in the seat your sitting in right now? Why? At the time I didnt understand the question, I mean it was Sunday... where else would we be? ! I remember my grandmother telling me that the path to being a good person was through church, and who wouldnt want to be a good person?

Now Im going to lay out a scenario and if this sounds familiar I want you to stand. Your parents or family members were the first person to take you to church. They were the first to put a bible in your hand, and being the people you trusted most, stood by you when you heard, for the first time, the written words of Jesus Christ. Almost the entire congregation stood. Yet to me this came as no surprise. Of coarse our parents would be the ones to take us to church, they know everything about God.

And that friends, is why you are here. Your parent chose your religion at a time when you were to young to make your own choices. At some point in your life a Bible was placed in hand and some one you trust told you it was the inspired word of God! As he spoke his voice grew exited and his eyes flared wild in the light. Flickering candles sent a vibrant ballet of shadows across his face. And today many of you are setting the truth, path, and faith of your children right now.

You put a Bible in their hand, you brought them through the door and youve told them that your words are true, the word of the church is true and most importantly, the word of the Bible is true. All your beliefs, you give to them as fact. And why? Because at one point in time someone whose word was gold, told you! ... Thats not Religion thats Gossip. Looking around the room I saw several angry faces.

My grandmother eyed the man-with-no-name with a contentment I had rarely seen in her. It almost appeared as if she were in some sort of pain yet she never turned her eyes away from the speaker. I too, felt a pain to his word. For the most part I was confused but the parts I understood I didnt like. Was he saying that my Nana had lied to me? Is that why my Mom stopped going to church, did she know the truth?

I looked over to a friend a few seats away. Catching my gaze he shrugged his shoulders expressing his shared confusion. Realizing I was miss the speech I returned my attention back to the speaker. All we as people know is what we are told. If you were raised in a Muslim home you would swear to me that the Koran was the written word of God not the Bible, if you were raised Jewish, Jesus would mean nothing more to you then another prophet. Now Im not saying change your religion, or dont teach your kids about God.

All I want is to open your minds to the importance behind religion. We should not put our faith behind details. There is no divine voice to tell us which religion is the right religion, so dont try to be that voice to your children. Let them know that it makes no difference which religion they put their faith in, just teach them to have faith. Give them options and direction and let them find their own truths. Were their heart takes them is were they are supposed to be.

With that, he stepped down. As he headed toward the door he stopped and looked down at my grandmother. she remained stone faced never batting an eyebrow in is direction. Then, only for a second, he turned his gaze to me, and in that second I knew him and he knew me. He shared the same eyes as my Nana and the same eyes as me.

I never saw uncle Lerret again. No one in my family ever talks about him and seems to change the subject when I try to talk about him. All I know is that he inspired my mom so much she named me after him, Terrell which is Lerret backwards. I do not go to my Grandmothers church anymore. Now I spend a number of Sundays going to different churches, always searching for the one that fits me best.

My religion is no longer composed of random facts stated by any one book, but a collection of ideals that I feel are true to me. It was my uncle that opened my mind to the concept of choice. He is the only individual I have ever met that could, if only for a second, get a room of closed minded people to lean back in their seats and say Maybe! Bibliography:
