Holden Caulfield is a sixteen-year-old prep student who failed out of school miserably the week before Christmas. A few days before he is scheduled to vacate his position at the school he concludes that he shall go to New York City where he lives. Even though Holden has many friends in both school and in New York he usually finds himself lonely and in need of someone to listen to him. The only person he thinks of like someone who is truly his friend is his ten-year-old sister Phoebe. He wishes he were able to tell her that he deserted his school, but in fear of her telling his parents he refrains from it. While in New York, he spends time with many of his acquaintances but does not feel he has had a considerable contact with any of them.

After a day of wondering the city and wasting his money, he decides to go see his sister, who disillusions him by being annoyed at him being expelled from his fourth school. He believes that the only way to escape his problem is to run away and live in the country as a deaf-mute who will not need to communicate with anybody. On the brink of a nervous affliction, he changes his mind and decides to rejoin his family. He enrolls in a hospital or rest home program not far from Hollywood, and he is telling us the story while he is there. In conclusion, to the book he is not sure whether he will able to proceed with his life after he is released, and he bewails telling us the story in the first place.

Many of the incidents from Catcher in the Rye took place before the weekend we spend with Holden. Many of the things that caused Holden to be who he is happened many years before the story is being told therefore a very important part of his life went on inside his head. Catcher in the Rye is a novel about a disquieted teenager. Holden cannot contend with the people surrounding him, the school he is enrolled in and the everyday problems he must face. He takes every one of his experiences and twists it into a way that satisfies his fantasy life. Mr.

Caulfield tells his story in a sequence of flashbacks, or deviations. There is nothing logical or orderly about the way a person s memory works, therefore letting Holden s mind drift in and out of past and present.
