Why does everyone of us have different life destinations or fates? What influences our live direction, views, behaviors, and our struggle for the best? Why are some people very persistent and goal oriented but others are weak inside and put there hands down and dont want to change anything? I believe that those people had something bad happened in their lives and at that moment they didnt try to overcome it. They stayed at the same level of development as they were after that situation and it led them to have lots of problems in their present world. But others people just depend a lot on somebody else and they are afraid of changing something for better.

In The Dolls house by Henry Ibsen and The glass Menagerie by Tennessee William both authors bring the examples of controllable attitude and prejudices that two characters have towards their close people. Helmer, The Dolls House character, is a man who wants to control his wife and children. He treats his spouse like a doll or an infant child. The house is what Helmer provides for Nora and her children, like someone would for their dolls.

He really cares about his pride, that we can see from his wifes words: Torvalds is a man with a great deal of pride- it would be terribly embarrassing and humiliating for him if he thought he owed anything to me. '' He doesnt beleive in true love and the fact that a loving person can do anything for his / her beloved. What Helmer says is: But nobody sacrifices his honor for the one she loves. When Nora, his wife, receives the second letter Helmer spontaneously starts forgiving her and everything else he had told her before he forgot. It is very cold and insincere of him to go from one side to another, and it can possibly be believed that his feelings are true for Nora. People do not love a person one moment, and then deny it, or vise versa.

Forgiving Nora, Helmer makes different comments that characterizhim as sexist. He says: ... It was just you hadn't the experience to realize what you were doing. This sentence shows Helmer's lack of confidence in Nora's decisions. Next he states: I shouldn't be a proper man if your feminine helplessness didn't make you twice as attractive to me. This statement says a lot about Helmer's opinion on a man's and woman's place in society.

This sort of control that Helmer is having over Nora would be like that of Amanda's over her children. She is a mother of two kids who wants to be in control of their lives. Though Amanda often retreats to memories of her past, she carrie about the present situation. She insists Tom should find Laura a husband before he abandons them, fearing that Laura will wind up to be an old maid. Although her own marriage brought her nothing but poverty, she still believes a husband can be saleable for Laura. Although her care and love for her children are sincere, her outspoken and overbearing nature often hurts them.

But the different about Helmer's and Amanda's control is that she thinks about her kids and wants the best for them, though she doesnt understand that it is better to give her kids freedom of choice and decide themselves what is best. But Helmer is a man of control in his character. He believes that it is right for his wife to be like a doll and thats how it should be. Helmer and his family live in the society that values money, contracts, and conventional respectability over anything else and has no room for people who do not fit into its expectations. The rules matter to him more than the people whom they hurt. He is a very successful participant in this middle-class society, a professional on the way up the social scale, the bank.

He seems to like his job and to earn success. But Amanda's life and misery is obvious. She and her kids live in poverty and have to dream about a better life. And those differences in the social status of two characters definitely influence their behavior, morals and values. But what is similar in them is that they are both the victims of their society that dictates them its rules and regulation.

A well doing bank worker and a shrew, poor old lady both depend on their surroundings which tell them what to do. Bibliography web web
