Trifles by Susan Glaspell The main idea of this paper is to show feminist argument, which the play makes by its conclusion. I want to start from the few biographical facts. They helped to understand me the play itself and enlighten hidden aspects of the play. Susan Glaspell was one of those American writers, which wrote about women and their lives, in other words she wrote about herself and people she new.
Susan Glaspell wrote about inequality of the sexes and the inability of women to live their own lives without reliance on men. In nineteenth century feminism was a rare occurrence and differs from what we understand now under this word. If we look back in the nineteen-century we will see an awful picture. Women dont have the right to vote, they were totally depended on men. Women dont receive any decent education, and it was unheard of fro women to think. In my humble opinion, women were somewhere between furniture and home pets.
Violence, power, individual freedom and self-consciousness are the most urgent social problems. And the problem of violence against women is one of the most important for our society. According to the feminist theory each patriarchal society assume that male domination over the female and this already is violence against individual freedom. Especially I want to outline the family violence, which was very wide spread in the nineteenth century. The play conveys a brutal experience of being a farm wife in nineteenth century and also displays some early stages of feminism. I think that the play by its conclusion play makes the following feminist argument: family violence against woman is a socioeconomic factor.
She is violated because society justifies it and does not give her any protection. There is no possible way for a woman to protect herself, her children and her freedom while society will consider family relationship as a something very private and untouchable.
