Frank Huyler's essays from THE BLOOD OF STRANGERS Frank Huylers is a physician from New Mexico. One critic wrote about him: Dr. Huyler's short, intense book treats of only the most important matters: life and death. His prose is nearly invisible, and therefore it allows us to see what he is talking about. And once we see it, we are not likely to forget it. This is a young writer with a big mind - and an even bigger heart.

Frank Huyler's essays are easy to read and bring the reader understanding of various life aspects that the reader is usually not thinking about in his day to day activities. These aspects include: irony, fortitude, guilt, love, desire, and faith. In my essay I would like to analyze three stories from his book The Blood of Strangers: Stories from Emergency Medicine: The Unknown Assailant: Page 3, Through the Dark, Softly: Page 15, Faith: Page 21. These three essays have one great issue of faith and love expressed inside, which proves that we have to always be patient and polite to our peers. The doctor is obliged to any person in trouble. That is the most important rule for any doctor.

Young people learn this phrase when they come to medical institute and take an oath. No matter what your patient is: rich or poor, young or old, good or bad, enemy or friend, he is suffering and the doctors obligation is to help him. It is easy? No, it is not easy; the doctor must forget his own feelings, break his own attitude and do his job that is to save ones life. In the story The Unknown Assailant we see the irony of our life. The doctor has a young patient.

He was delivered to the hospital with many gun-shot wounds, dying from the loss of blood and demanding the urgent operation. Suddenly, the young doctor found out that his patient is a robber and a killer, who killed more than one person, more than once in order to get the money. In the next room of the same hospital there is his victim, who is dying from the wounds delivered by the young patient. It is difficult to imagine yourself in the young doctors place and feel what he felt. Since the early days of our childhood we are taught to help good people and despise bad. But is this situation the doctor must forget about it, break all the set mental rules, he learned in school and from his parents.

Now he is a doctor, not a simple person and therefore he must feel and think as a doctor and act as a doctor. Really, how could he act in another way if the young patient looked in his eyes and asked: Please, he said, like a small child beginning to cry, I dont want to die. Dont let me die. ? On the other hand did he think at this moment about the victims, which he killed? Did he think about if they had wanted to die or not?

These questions inevitably flashed across the young doctors mind. But he forced himself to forget them and give the killer a chance. For that moment he had already promised him: Youre not going to die, well take care of you. And even having got to know that his patient was a criminal, the doctor couldnt break this promise. He is a criminal for the world, for the police, as well as for other people, but for the doctor he is a simple patient, whom he must help in any case. And he was not sorry of that.

Notwithstanding that he was glad that he was not his patients victim alone and unready, face-to-face to the killer, he said about his patient: He seemed guiltless, unburdened by the act; his relief on learning that his victim was alive and would leave the hospital was real. It meant one less murder charge to face. Who knows, maybe after much assistance given to the criminal by other people and his suffering, he would change for the better. The feeling of emptiness is the most destructive. We feel so in the most difficult moments of our life. We feel so when we loose our friends or relatives, fail our favorite job, admit our guilt, and loose our hope.

This feeling means that we lost the thread we hold and have nothing to feed our soul and no aim for the future. We feel as if we would loose the essence of our life. Form the Frank Huyler's essay Through the Dark, Softly we found out that the emptiness is exactly what the doctor feels when his patient dies. Every one of us has a mission to do but every other mission cant be even compared with the doctors one to save ones life. I realized that I had saved him, that he was alive because of me- that is the best feeling the doctor can have. We are always very upset when our task is not done correctly, but if we said that the doctor is upset when his task is not done, we would be wrong, because his fail means the death of his patient.

Here we deal with the strong feeling of guilt. The doctor could help the patient, he did his best like the writer says: I did my best, matching up the creases of his skin, easing the bright half-moon of the needle in and out, daubing away the dark blood that rose in little balls from the needle point, tying my knots like a fly fisherman, but the patient died. But the feeling of guilt goes away and the emptiness comes instead of it. After the death of the patient the doctor is feeling himself dead for some time till something makes him return to the everyday life. This topic is continued in the next story Faith.

Some people do not believe that, but our Faith can help us in trouble. Here the writer tells us about his own experience dealing with it. In the previous essay we see despise all the doctors efforts, the patient died, because it was the time for him to die, though the doctor was sure that he could help him. Also it could be vice versa. Our life does not always depend on us; there is a greater power that can suddenly intervene. The doctor always has, he must have the faith that they can save even the hopeless patient.

Really, there can be such cases when the doctor looks at the patient and according to his professional examination, he makes a conclusion that he cant help him. But still he must try to do that, because he is a doctor and this is his obligation. And very often the doctor founds hopeless patient alive and the other dead. Faith plays very important role in our life as well. If we dont believe in what we are doing, we will not succeed. However, we will not do what we know is hopeless.

But the doctors have to do so, that is why faith is so important for them. The stories, written by the young doctor Frank Huylers are very easy to read. They do not contain any long philosophic discussions; the writer only describes the cases from his own life. However, having read the stories, we realize that they make us think about the things we never paid attention to before.
