Gorgias is about the struggle to overcome the attraction of worldly success and to concentrate on true morality. Plato tries to prove that only morality can bring a person true happiness: this is one of his most widely read dialogues - vivid, clear, and persuasive.
This is Socratic dialogues I like most of all. It is a fact that Plato created it in a little while after the execution of Socrates. This dialogue is easy to understand. This dialogue is also an introduction to Plato's the Republic.
Rhetoric is to justice what cookery is to medicine. Socrates considers rhetoric to be a simple false impression of the more pure notion of justice, just as the false routine of cookery is to the true art of medicine: each creates a solid image of something more natural and real. The claim makes known Socrates's (and through him Plato's) strong revulsion for rhetoric and oration, in spite of his own use of speech later in the dialogue. Actually in Gorgias there are some useful quotes I would like to explain here: 1. It is worse to do than to suffer wrong. Socrates persists upon the greater shame of committing, as opposed to being the sufferer of, a wrongful act.
This more delicate shame itself results from the higher degree of sin implicated with imposing, rather than suffering, wrong, as Callicles himself admit. One's doing wrong therefore is worse (in terms of justice and injustice) than one's having wrong done to him or her. 3. That part of the soul in foolish people where the desires reside the uncontrolled and non retentive part likened to a leaky jar, because it can never be filled. Socrates uses this leaky jar metaphor in order to show the significance of temperance, a driving theme of the dialogue. Essentially, Socrates intends to prove that one should control his desires and it will bring him closer to virtue. 4.
The good is not the same as the pleasant, my friend, nor the evil as the painful. This quotation explains Socrates's placement of medicine, gymnastics and justice against cookery, beautification and rhetoric. He insists that one should rather control his desires than satisfy them. 5. The words lawfulness and law are applied to all order and regularity of the sound this means justice and temperance...
By this quote Socrates's already has stated his goal of considering the virtuous life, and the other participants have accepted laws of behavior as the means by which to attain this virtue. Socrates begins his dialog from the discussion about the oratory and its nature. Socrates would like to talk to the well-known orator Gorgias who is in the town. They are making several conclusions: it is better to suffer wrong than to do wrong, and that it is better for a man to be punished for his wrongs than to escape punishment.
Implicit in his argument is the belief that all wrongdoing is the result of ignorance; following up on this idea, he admits that dictators and politicians who hold vast powers are the most miserable men of all. He goes so far as to describe Athenian heroes such as Pericles as miserable men because the state was less happy when they left power than when they came to power, the proof being that such men eventually lost power and were even hated. For Socrates and his follower Plus, one will be happy if he is virtuous and self-disciplined. His approach to convince the people is amazing. He could make a wonderful speech and convince people that he is right, but he does this by implanting not knowledge but belief in the minds of his audience; He knows that the better way to make people listen to him is to say what they want to hear, not that is more useful for them.
He supposes right and wrong are unsubstantial to the orator. Callicles want to encourage Socrates to stop his unsubstantial fixation on philosophy and do and speak to people as a public speaker; because if he is accused of saying wrong he would not be able to defend himself. So according to Gorgias our young person can feel well only if he quit this job at once, because as we mentioned before one should overcome the attraction of worldly success and to concentrate on true morality. But lets see if it is the only way out now. Yes, our person is young, he doesnt know the world very well, but it is clear that we cant meet every day only what we want to meet. The person must have his opinion about the would inside of his soul but it is not necessary to let another people know about what you think if you are not going to write the philosophic studies.
Also we know that one will be happy if he is virtuous and self-disciplined. This is the most proper advice for our graduator. Just to wait a little, work for some time in this company, get some experience and then try to find another job. It is essential to remember that any experience is good and it will bring the fruits.
The phrase let the world be lost, but justice will come is too old. It is not match our modern would. Now we should be more reasonable and remember that the philosophy Those who makes injustice, should raise above fear and demand punishment from the judge as a medicine from the doctor so that the made injustice has not caused damage to soul and has not made incurable and that by means of detection of the evil deed it could be released from the greatest suffering felt from not smoothed down injustice" is comparative and should not be thought about carefully before following it. So, what did the philosophy do? It released the human person from external violence and gave it the internal maintenance. It overthrew all false another's gods and developed in the person the internal form for revelations of a true deity.
In the ancient world where the human person on advantage has been suppressed by the beginning natural, material the philosophy has released human consciousness from exclusive submission of this appearance and has given it internal support, by opening for his contemplation an ideal spiritual empire, in the new Christian world, where this spiritual empire, this ideal accepted under the form of external force, has taken hold of consciousness and wanted to subordinate and suppress it. The philosophy has risen against this spiritual force changing the internal character, has broken its sovereignty, has released, has found out and has developed own essence of the person first in his rational, then in his material element. But time flies and the philosophy changes in order to match the time. So I think that every person should have the philosophy as a basis but remember that it teaches us to be reasonable and act in harmony with our soul and brain at once.
