Have We Learned Our Lesson? People are very short-sighted creatures. They dwell in a world of illusions never giving it a second thought that the world they are living in can be not as idyllic as they might think. I used to live in such a world, where a quarrel with a friend or a failed test seemed the most terrible thing in life.

I knew that there are various types of people, that some of them may be very kind and sympathetic, some may be vicious and cruel. Those types are always balancing, they coexist and teach you how to live. I used to be proud of living in a highly developed society that achieved so much, invented so many things, and improved our life to such an extent that every person was sure that there was hardly anything beyond human capacity. I felt that we were masters of the world, we were secure and powerful, until the day of September 11, 2001 came. Two plains crashed into the Twin Towers.

The whole world was taken aback by the awful scenes of horror and death that appeared on TV. More than 2, 800 people died in that hell. In a flash the scenery of New York has changed forever. And minds of millions of people all around the world have been also changed forever The 11 th of September became a turning point in the history of humanity.

Now millions of people in the United States and in the whole world live in an absolutely new explosive world in which you cannot be safe even in your own house. Many people including me for the fist time in their life began to critically analyze the society in which they live and which fosters such cruelty. I started to ask questions and I am desperately trying to find answers. Now I do not take on trust everything what politicians say. I begin to suspect that behind those smiling faces that are looking at us from TV screens there is something that is not being said and will never be said. The events of the 11 th of September were very tragic and irrevocable.

Nobody will ever be able to make up for all the lives of innocent people who died in that hell. But now when the dust of the destroyed buildings has settled, more and more men and women start thinking for themselves. It is a beginning of a new process of development that is called self-actualization. Terrible events that affect fates of millions of people help us cleanse our minds from the webs of numerous lies.

Slowly, bit by bit the fog in our minds disappears and we feel like facing the truth. Unfortunately, the reality around us is very cruel, it makes us understand that we should change the situation and create a better world in which lives of millions of people will not depend on the greediness of the few, in which life is more important than profits, the world in which men and women live in harmony and never become similar to a horde of animals that gnaw at each others throat without understanding their own motives. But have we all learned our lesson? Unfortunately not.

Not all of us understand the necessity of building a new world. On the graves of the victims of that dreadful tragedy our politicians made a solemn vow to stop the evil. Nevertheless they still pursue a policy of retaliation that involves the world into new horrors of war, terror and violence. They failed to understand a very simple truth that violence causes only violence. They unleash one war after another and seem never be able to stop. It is very difficult to understand now the reasons of these wars and it is even more difficult to predict their outcomes.

Trying to eliminate terror and spread democracy to the authoritarian countries, we impose our will showing ourselves as authority that blindly believes in its righteousness and does not tolerate any other opinion. Is that real democracy? If we really want to stop terror and violence we should carefully study their reasons. If terror exists in this world, it must be a reaction to some processes of our reality. It is proven by many scientists that terrorism has a deep social origin. It is an ultimate protest against poverty, hunger and desperation.

Millions of people have to suffer from those evils and that suffering makes them extremely vulnerable. They become very obedient and can be easily ruled by ambitious leaders who use this situation to their benefit. They treat the weak, hungry and discouraged people as weapons that help them strengthen their power and achieve their mean political goals. At the same time those poor people become a target of the countries who try to fight terrorism. They find themselves between two fires that ruthlessly kill them and their children. So I think that our politicians should think better of it when they make such serious decisions as to declare another war to some country of the Third World under the pretext that its ruler produces nuclear weapons.

This ruler can be overthrown without artillery. If we really want to live in peace and be a highly developed nation we should use peaceful ways to eliminate terror and evil. Why not do our best and help common people of those countries understand the necessity of living in peace and democracy, help them stabilize the economic and political situation in their countries, make education accessible to all strata of the society? The tragedy of the 11 th of September opened my eyes to many problems of the modern world. I hope that it will become a lesson that we all will diligently learn. I believe in common sense of our politicians, I am sure they will be able to find better ways of fighting with terrorism.

I believe that we all combining our efforts will secure our future and future of next generations.
