The Salt Lake City Olympics Scandal Every citys government wants to attract investments to the local economy. This is normal, because it leads to creation of more jobs and therefore, is vital to the efficient functioning of citys economy. Yet, with increasing globalization tendencies, city officials beginning to find themselves in precarious position, as their willingness to do more good for their people often balances on the edge of law. The example of Salt Lake City Olympic scandal is the most representative in this respect. In 1999 a few members of IOC (International Olympic Committee) have admitted of receiving bribes from the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee and from the people, closely associated with local business circles. It raised many ethical questions; the most important of them is whether it is appropriate that the interests of community can be lobbied by the corporate agenda.
Three days after the details of the Olympic deal became known to the public, Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini announced that she would not seek reelection in 2000, as had been expected. While Corradini denied that her decision had anything to do with the Olympics bribery scandal, city council members had called for her resignation. This shows that the Mayor of hypothetical Big City will have to give a lot of consideration to whether it would benefit Big City in the long run, if he had offered contracts to commercial companies, in exchange for illegal favors on his part. It is not a secret that this policy is being practiced by the great deal of city counsel members in America. As the matter of fact, city officials do not lose much of the popular support, even if allegations of any wrongdoings on their part do break out.
This is because citizens are much more concerned about the immediate economic benefits, rather than with issues of ethics, when it comes to attempts to boost citys economy. The Mayor of Big City faces a moral dilemma what is the greater good, well - being of his people or following the strict rules of conduct for the City official? It is very hard to answer this question in one-dimensional manner. There are many laws in place that are based on the principles of outdated Christian morality and thats why it is becoming increasingly more difficult to adapt them to the realities of nowadays. There are two probable scenarios if Mayor deploys the illegal means to attract investments to his city. If this proves to be very effective, hell be much likely to remain in the office, even if public learns that he broke the law.
The example of Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini shows that she had only resigned because of personal moral stance on the subject of scandal. There were a few surveys conducted in Salt Lake City after her recognition and they show that she even became more popular among people, after the accident took place. Another scenario is much worse: if it gets to be discovered that Mayor had participated in illegal activities, in order to bring more businesses to his town, it could result in his arrest. This, of course, would have a devastating effect of citys economy, as potential investors would get discouraged. It will be also very hard for the next Mayor to repair Big Towns damaged reputation. In my opinion, the elected city officials need to be very competent in the field of attracting businesses and making their cities economies more vital.
This refers to their flexibility more than to any other of their organizational qualities. There is a simple rule that has to be observed at all times nobody can be charged as guilty until caught. I think that, even though there are a lot of questionable aspects in attracting investments with illegal means, they still should not be rejected out of hand, as sometimes they prove to be as only effective ones. The Mayor of Big City will do a great service to his city if he does whatever he has to do, without endangering Big Citys reputation.
