What is culture? Though it is not a physical thing that you can touch, smell or feel, people do indeed adopt it from others through years, from generation to generation. Due to huge technological progress nowadays people are able to change his / her appearance and even the color of skin. A person can learn how to speak perfectly this or that language and move to another country to live. But he / she would never get rid of the cultural heritage whether he / she likes it or not.
It is something that every person has in his blood. And what a pity people are still influenced by this cultural difference in their everyday life. My family is from Africa by origin. My ancestors moved to USA in 1916 with a sincere desire to settle in this country. One of my ancestors had heard a lot about the beautiful lands in South California and the opportunities they had.
So he moved here from Florida in search of nice place to live and good job to work at. Since that time our family lives in South California and I consider it to be my family's home base. My family worked hard to achieve what we have now. We stared from the very bottom but with a great ambition to climb out from the poorness. My grand-grand parents worked in the cotton and corn fields in order to feed the family. Later, as years passed, they went to work at the sewing factory.
Those were hard times for my family. Because of great racial division and educational problems my ancestors didnt manage to have good education. My grand-grand parents wanted to give their children some basic knowledge in writing and reading skills and were trying to find some home schooling or at least somebody who could teach them. But as I said it was impossible during those times.
Because of the skin color we couldnt attend white school where the highest-level of education was available. The only possibility that we were given was the elementary schooling. Now of course things have changed. Most of my family members possess masters and doctors degrees in various spheres of study.
There is no problem now to enter a university that you like or to get the profession that you want. Our family managed to hold together and support each other and we passed those hard times of racism and inequality. Though these things still exist nowadays, black people are given same privileges and opportunities as white people. My family is and always was a family of great strength and unity. We trust and support each other and we learned how to trust others outside our family clan. There are no more slaves and masters, no more human ownership now.
But it took our family long time as well as other ones to get the same respect and same opportunities in everyday life. Concluding my essay I want to say that it is hard to understand other cultures when you misunderstand your own one. It is hard to say what you would do or feel if your belonged to this or that race and had this or that cultural background. But I can say that people should remember that God created us as equal beings and we have to respect all human beings no matter what color he / she is and what cultural heritage he / she possesses. If people had he desire for a cultural learn and would be curious to look at others cultures in order to try to understand them it would be much easier to accept differences in the cultures.
