The truth behind the lies Within the scope of this research, we are going to discuss the abstract ways of showing the society's faults based on two literary works: Kafkas Metamorphosis and Swifts Modest Proposal. We will see how each author uses extreme falsification of reality to prove his point. In Metamorphosis, a person finds himself transformed into an insect. As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect (The Anthology, 1999).
The climax of the story seems to be the first few words, allowing the reader to be shocked from the beginning and to learn what has led to such a change. From the outset, George Samsa mutates into a beetle, a fact that later becomes known to him. He is repulsive to look at and his boss leaped down several steps and vanished (The Anthology, 1999) to avoid the sight of Gregor. This sort of isolation is dangerous and frightening.
His only way he can see what is happening is through the small crack in the door that his sister leaves for him. The Samsa family approaches him with caution, as if he were some sort of monster and not the son and brother he once was. His entire family despises him and eventually realizes that he is no longer a component of the household. This is reflective of his life at work, where he is always traveling and has no companions outside of the world he has created for himself. He is completely isolated from any social existence and his employers only care for his arrival at his job, not for his welfare. No soul can survive without friends and communication because it is vital for a person to grow.
Another way to view his metamorphosis is in that of self-desire. Gregor may not have realized what he wanted in life, but the unsettling dreams he has are a sign to his troubled life. This way, he can express what he is feeling and show a layer to him that is concealed. Gregor is capable of thought and reason even after he mutates. He retains his ability to think like a human, yet has a different outlook on his life to that of a beetle.
He is able to decipher what type of food a beetle enjoys through a reasonable process of guessing and checking. One after another and with tears of satisfaction in his eyes he quickly devoured the cheese, the vegetables and the sauce; the fresh food, on the other hand, had no charms for him (). It was not until the end of his life that he realized how lonesome he has always been. In this state of vacant and peaceful meditation he remained until the tower clock struck three in the morning. The first broadening of light in the world outside the window entered his consciousness once more (The Anthology, 1999). The light that he sees refers to his last thought, the last piece of humanity he had until he was dead even from the inside.
As was previously mentioned in this paper, Gregor changes because of his alienation. This is a very interesting point that this sort of change can and does happen to almost everybody. There is no one that cares for him anymore and Gregor has a feeling of loneliness. It is apparent that the most important theme of the story is the idea of alienation the most important society's flaw depicted by Kafka. Jonathan Swifts Proposal has been canonized as a satirical model of wit. Swifts essay is often seen as an allegory for England's oppression of Ireland.
Swift, himself and Irishman, would seem to have pointed his razor wit against the foreign nation responsible for his citys ruin. He uses extreme falsification of reality in his work to prove the oppression. England's consumption of Ireland is mentioned expressly, but in a single clause which certainly does not inform but transiently exploits the great central conceit at work in the Proposal: although I could perhaps name a country that would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it (preserving the flesh of the infant carcasses). (The Anthology, 1999) Swift states that Infants flesh will be in season throughout the year and that a large quantity of infant flesh will be consumed. He indicates that cooks will vie with each other in preparing new dishes of this food which is a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food. (The Anthology, 1999) Swift next exhausts the list of ways one can prepare this food in order to emphasize that the food will incite a continuous craving in the people who devour it. The proposer also derives by-products from the infants flesh; clearly, he is establishing a major industry which will use a lot of infant flesh.
The enormity of the business is again seen in regard to the actual slaughter, for he says "Shambles may be appointed for this Purpose, in the most convenient of Parts of Dublin; and Butchers we may be assured will not be wanting; although I rather recommend buying the Children alive, and dressing them hot from the knife, as we do roasting pigs. " (The Anthology, 1999) After the enormity of the business has been indicated, Swift solidifies his attack on Ireland when he states that the Irish have 100, 000 infants to sell each year. He continues that a quarter seasoned with a little pepper or salt, will be very good boiled on the fourth day. (The Anthology, 1999) The crucial passage in the proposal which underscores the bitterness which Swift feels towards the poor he allegedly is advocating through falsification of reality is the one in which the speaker asserts that the prescriptions for infant cannibalism is calculated only for this one individual Kingdom of Ireland, and urges, Therefore let no man talk to me of other expedients: Of taxing our absentees at five shillings a pound: Of using neither cloths, nor household furniture except what is of our own growth and manufacture: of utterly rejecting the materials and instruments that promote foreign luxury, (The Anthology, 1999) and so on, through a catalog that repeats precisely those steps to betterment which Swift has repeatedly urged upon his compatriots, who have repeatedly ignored them. This is the point in the essay where the proposer turns from barbarous plan and becomes the accuser, confronting his Irish audience with a devastating assessment of their own condition and, at least obliquely, of their own guilt. It is not surprising that the targets of Swifts falsification cannot be, and are not meant to be, clearly distinguished from one another, nor are that Swifts allegiances between the English, the Anglo-Irish, and the natives blurred and fluctuating things. These confusions provide essential energies of Swifts style. The Modest Proposal clearly is an embodiment of the complexities and contradictions of Swifts contemporary society.
