Elder abuse Nowadays our slogans are make the way for youth, youth is our future and so on. It is nice and true. But because of our natural selfishness we forgot that we have not only future but the past where we were brought up by the elders. Many of us are just ashamed to recognize that they often simply forget about the existence of their old relatives, not to mention taking care of them. Elders can suffer infringements of motility, mentality and ability to orient in space that is why they need care of other people. Unfortunately families and society very often consider such people to be burdensome and reduce up to the minimum the help and care that are so necessary for them.

According to Farrell, W. , Father and Child Reunion: How to Bring the Dads We Need to the Children We Love, J, P, Tarcher, 301 p. , 2001, cruelty in relation to old people can be shown in various forms. Unified classification does not exist, however concepts of physical, psychological and material humiliation are standard. Less often medical humiliation is set as a separate form. Definition of the category of humiliation of old people is represented as a more difficult problem rather than classification of the reasons, bringing to it. Till now extensive researches about the facts of cruel treatment of older persons were carried out in the advanced countries, and the available data is limited.

However the available information states that old people - both women, and men - become victims of the severe attitude and that such attitude towards older persons is surprisingly distributed both in advanced, and in less developed countries. The reviews which have been carried out in Australia, Canada and the Great Britain, have shown, that a share of older people which were reported to be exposed to cruel treatment or remained without care, changes from 3 up to 10 percent. In Canada the most widespread form of cruel treatment was the absence of attention - in 55 percent of all informed cases. Cases of physical cruelty made fifteen percent, and financial operation was marked in 12 percent of cases. In the USA during the period between 1986 and 1996 the National center on a problem of cruel treatment with older persons has registered 150 -percent increase in number of cases of such abusing on which informed public services of protection. Within only one year 36 percent of the medical personnel have declared, that they witnessed the physical violence; 10 percent as it has been revealed, have made at least one physical violence; 81 percent witness a case of psychological violence; 40 percent offended the patient.

Now after small social investigations we can define the following reasons: dependence on the persons who provide care, weakness of family ties, pressure of family problems, lack of material resources, psychological features of the persons showing cruelty, lack of social support as low payment for care services that promotes not humane position of the personnel. As a result of the abuse many old people become isolated from the society, ignored by the personal in the public places, remain without finances, medicines that can lead to the sudden death. I even dont mention that old people cant be left without care because they can die at any moment and their relatives would not even know about that for long, how it often happens. (Prisoners In Their Own Homes: Male Victims of Elder Abuse, Glenn Sacks web The bad attitude towards old people is more and more often ascertained by medical and social services. It goes without saying that old people need medical care first of all. Doctors, having formulated a problem and having mobilized public opportunities, have played a significant role in the movement against cruel treatment of children. The problem of humiliation of old people recently has got in the sphere of attention of medical service.

A deepening of the knowledge of doctors and other medical experts about attributes of the severe and scornful treatment of elders is a first step to its eradication. Having revealed a family with a high risk of cruel treatment of old people, a doctor should draw the attention of social services and to render possible support. I would like to give the example of the rules, created by the Worldwide Medical Association, reported by Nursing home abuse web: 1. Main principles 1.

Elders, as well as all the people, have equal rights for the medical and social help. 2. The Worldwide Medical Association declares that doctors are obliged to protect physical and psychological interests of elders. 3. Doctors should supervise the reception by the patient of a maximum of the possible help, communicating directly with the elders, the social service and the family. 4. If the doctor suspects bad care, he is obliged to inform a social service sponsoring the old man or his family about it. If, despite of the measures taken by the doctor, the bad attitude is kept, and also in case of high probability of the patients death, the doctor is obliged to inform the authorities. 5.

The right of old men for a free choice of the doctor should not be limited. National medical associations - the members of W should struggle for maintenance of this right in any medical social system. II. Recommendations The doctor who is treating old men should: - reveal old men in relation to whom cruel treatment and / or neglecting is possible, - professionally estimate and carry out the treatment of consequences of cruel treatment, - remain objective and unbiased, - try to establish and support therapeutic interaction with the family of such patient (often the doctor is the only professional supporting long contact with the family), - according to the status to inform on all the prospective cases of the severe and / or scornful treatment of old people, - Whenever possible to use the help of medical, social and psychiatric services, - with the purpose of reduction of intensity in families of high risk, in every possible way to promote increase of public support of the services providing the home-nursing help. According to Murray, A. Elder abuse, 2000, the solution of a problem of abusing concerning elder people has been concentrated on increase of knowledge and understanding of this phenomenon.

These efforts find wide reflection in mass media, taking into account serious abusing and cases of an inadmissible negligence. The mass-media play the extremely important role, making the people pay to this and stimulating corresponding measures in struggle against this evil. The educational programs developed so that participants had at the order of an opportunity of the estimation and revealing of cases of abusing and a negligence for the acceptance of effectual measures, are designed for lawyers, politicians, judicial executors, social workers and other experts. Materials, including methods of check for definition misleading and able to lead into error situations, reports for transfer has put on consideration and proceeding, and also educational complete sets for the personnel on care were developed to help them the directories, assisting to make an estimation of risk of abusing and to determine resources of a community for rendering assistance were useful for this category.

In the Internet there is a site of the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) (web), where every person can get the information about the situation with necessary statistics. And now I want everybody reading this paper to think about this problem and decide to be at least a bit more grateful and attentive to his own elders.
