Used as an online auction company, it has grown in leaps and bounds, and nowadays hosts an amazing diversity in the auction items. In fact, virtually anything can be sold on e-bay, as long as it does not flout basic rules of decency. The original procedure for the sale of anything on eBay followed a set time auction format, but this has been broadened to include a Buy it now category. Several other features have been developed over the years to keep eBay ahead of the competition. These will be discussed in this paper.
From a standalone company, over the years, eBay has incorporated other companies into its mainstream operations. These companies are either purchased by eBay to become integral part of it, or related to on third-party basis. For example, in 1996, a third party technology called Smart Market Technology was the first of e Bays external and binding deals, and it involved a company called Electronic Travel Auction. This technology became the bases for all eBay auctions involving plane tickets and travel products (Cohen, 2002). Ebay's growing internet presence called for a sophisticated online currency processing system. This was accomplished in 2002, when PayPal became a subsidiary of eBay.
Through PayPal, all the transactions involved in the auctions of eBay can now be performed entirely over the internet, with minimal risk due to Pay Pals advanced guards against online fraud. This reputation and the sheer convenience of PayPal propelled eBay into an entirely higher level of performance. Nowadays, PayPal is the dominant online transaction system world wide (Suciu, 2008). The numerous business transactions within eBay require convenient and sophisticated communications between the business parties. To this end, eBay purchased Skype, an online communication software, in 2005. Skype provides avenues for making calls over the internet, instant messaging, video conferencing and file sharing.
Voice calls can be made to other users of the software at no charges, or to conventional telephones and mobile phones at a prescribed charge. Skype's affiliation with eBay has boosted e Bays business transactions remarkably over the years (Suciu, 2008). Ebay's phenomenal success can be linked to its innovative and flexible features. People who want to sell their products, for example, can present them to the prospective customers in a number of ways. They can list them in an Auction style so that, over a specified number of days, the highest bidder becomes the winner for that item.
For people who are selling many units of the same commodity, a fixed price format may suffice. This format is depicted on eBay as the Buy it now option, and it serves customers who would rather buy commodities at face-price value rather than go through the hustles of bidding (Wikipedia, N. D. ). An additional mode of selling products in eBay was introduced for people who simultaneously want to Auction their commodities and still avoid the time-consuming bidding wars. This is Dutch auctioning which works by allowing only one bid for the deal to be clinched. Commodities that have been listed under the Dutch auctioning system start off with a high asking price, and progressively reduce in price until someone accepts the price.
A reserve price is specified by the seller to avoid going below cost price. However, due to the low frequency of usage within eBay, this system of selling commodities is set to be discontinued from eBay in May, 2009 (Wikipedia, N. D. ). In order to cater to the ever bigger clientele world wide, eBay has created several localized websites, based on the major countries or regions that participate in eBay transactions.
These countries or regions include Australia, Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, Hongkong, India, United Kingdom, South Africa etc. For these countries or regions, the localized websites are but additional pages within the main web host of eBay.
