HOMELESSNESS ABSTRACT Recent news and current events tell us that people nowadays are placed in situations that test their judgment call and even challenge them to choose what their priorities are. The government, most especially, is one entity of the society that is usually confronted by situations that challenge it to attend to or not, to prioritize or set aside, to closely monitor or leave it hanging until such situations ceased to exist. The Census Bureaus Current Population Survey in 2004 indicated that the number of poverty increased by 1. 3 million of last year. In 2003, 35. 8 million people lived below the poverty line. This paper looks closely at the issue of homelessness and the reasons why people are driven to such abject poverty. The paper will also delve on how the government today responds to pressing situations that require care and immediate attention to those people who are poor, helpless, hopeless and seriously afflicted by all sorts of problems -- from poverty to sickness, malnutrition to homelessness.

Introduction According to Brennan Jensen, there is such a thing as chronic homelessness and at any given time, there are approximately 150, 000 people nationwide who are homeless and left on the streets after years of drifting from shelters to hospitals. These groups of people are expensive groups to ignore as evidenced by the huge amount of contributions from big foundations such as the Rockefeller and the Robert Wood Johnson. Even President Bush was spurred to create the Collaborative Initiative on Chronic Homelessness in 2003, which has given the $ 35 -million pooled from three agencies such as the Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, and the Veterans Administration. (Jensen). Efforts to Eradicate Home lesses The issue of homelessness is overwhelming and according to Philip Manga, a former music impresario who now is at the helm of the federal government's Interagency Council on Homelessness, the goal here is to end homelessness in ten years.

What is laudable is the effort that around 200 mayors have initiated so that they can draw plans to end homelessness once and for all. It has been revealed that those who are chronically homeless are mostly people who are male who more often have certain kinds of disability (Murphy). It has been observed that the supporters must gear their attention mostly on the chronically homeless. Most of the social service organizations complain that this issue has been in the forefront of the countrys problems and it was only during the last 20 years when it indeed became an increasing social problem (Murphy), In line with the governments efforts of improving the economies of scales, there is still a large portion of the population that is seriously affected by unfair wage distribution, especially in the international environment where global conditions are unfavorable to the poor people. Globalization, per se is sucking the lifeblood out of Corporate America as American wage earners compete with the low paying wage earners of China, and those of the other developing countries in the global market (Yglesias, 2005).

Conclusion It is ironic to see that the United States, which is supposed to be the promoter of democracy, is not living up to what it really stands for its people. It is supposed to have a government of the people, for the people and by the people and yet, it could not even stand up for its poor people who continually suffer from deprivation of the basic rights they are entitled to. The interests of the poor are spared over the interest of those whose interest is to gain profit from business or commercialism. REFERENCES Jensen, Brennan.
