Romeo and Juliet Quotation Analysis The quoted passage from Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet reveals authors own attitude towards the issues of love and intimacy. Romeo wants to have his relation with Juliet to be legitimized and this is why he asks Friar Lawrence to bless their secret marriage. In his turn, Lawrence provides Romeo with the insight on the dangerous nature of becoming a puppet of his own emotions. He tries to do it in the manner that is both convincing and tactful. At the same time, Lawrence fails to understand that the logic has no appeal to Romeo, because of his young age.
A) Friar Lawrence is an experienced man who tries to prevent Romeo from becoming consumed by his passion. He suggests that very often love causes a violent explosion, when it is being combined with a strong passion. In order for the Romeo to better understand his line of arguments, Lawrence compares excessive emotionalism to gunpowder, which is exposed to fire. B) Romeo ignores the advice of a much wiser man, which is why he ends up committing suicide, at the end of play. He chooses in favor of pursuing the affair with Juliet, while understanding perfectly well the anti-social essence of his behavior. We can say that it is not the hostility between Montekkis and Capuletis that made it impossible for Romeo and Juliet to be united as married couple, but the fact that their love to each other was deeply irrational, and as such, it could not last for too long.
C) The main theme of the quoted passage is that love passion does not necessarily lead to happiness. In fact, it is only when two people who are in love are able to rationalize their feelings, that their relationship has a strong foundation. D) We all are quite aware of what happens at the end of Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, because their families are strongly opposed against their marriage. Thus, we can say that Lawrence's words proved to be prophetic, as indulgence in excessive emotionalism, on the part of both lovers, causes their ultimate demise. The reason this phrase sounds very wise is that it is also utterly ironic. We can say that Romeo and Juliet consciously chose in favor of killing themselves, in order to prevent their love from being destroyed by objective reality. G) The tone of Lawrence's speech is both ironic and didactic.
We can say that Lawrence strives to prevent Romeo from making the biggest mistake in his life, but he still tries to sound respectful of Romeos feelings. There is no moralizing can be found in Lawrence's line of thoughts. However, only mature individual could truly appreciate his advice. Unfortunately, Romeos ears were closed to the voice of reason. I) In order to win Romeos understanding, Lawrence simplifies the philosophical point of its speech, by using metaphors.
As we have mentioned earlier, he tries to explain to Romeo what is going to happen if he pursues with his intention to marry Juliet by using the image of fire coming in contact with gunpowder. However, this has no effect on Romeo. Lawrence also compares passionate love to honey, which causes people to become nauseated, if consumed in large amounts: The sweetest honey is loathsome in his own deliciousness. Lawrence illustrates his point with concrete examples, but he has no chance of having his words considered by Romeo, because Romeo is a slave of his own sensual obsession.
